In Case You Missed It: 2022 Runoffs at VIR

The 59th SCCA National Championship Runoffs took place Sept. 24-Oct. 2, 2022, at VIRginia International Raceway. A beautiful, top-notch venue found along Virginia’s southern border with North Carolina, more than 500 competitors were on hand to contest 26 championship races around the 3.27-mile, 18-turn circuit.

Tire Rack Pole Award winners emerged after three days of qualifying under marvelous conditions. The remnants of Hurricane Ian then moved in off the Atlantic Ocean, generating substantially different weather for all three Hagerty Race Days. That meant the track vacillated between soaked, wet, sort of wet in places, kind of drying, and somewhat dry from one moment to the next.

An extremely tricky scenario indeed, but 26 skilled drivers managed to claim Runoffs victories in contests that had to be watched intently until the very last corner of the final lap – at any given moment of every race, anything could happen at a moment’s notice.

The SCCA National Championship Runoffs returns VIRginia International Raceway in 2023. Until then, detailed writeups of each 2022 Runoffs battle can be found below. Video replays of each 2022 Hagerty Race Days battles are currently available for on-demand viewing broken down by day (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). Videos are currently being broken into individual races for easier viewing consumption, with more information coming soon.
