Targa Competition Overview

Targa is competitive, social, and just a little bit ridiculous—in the best way possible. This page covers everything you need to know about classes, scoring, and rules so you can focus on what matters most: driving, laughing, and having an unforgettable experience.

Targa Competition Classes

Targa competition classes are based on SCCA National Time Trials classes, with a little flexibility baked in—because Targa is about fun first.

If your car is legally prepared for a Time Trials class, you’re good to go. If your car mostly fits a class but has a modification that wouldn’t normally be allowed, we’ll simply place you in the most appropriate class to keep things fair and competitive.

One important note for the rule-lawyers: If someone tries to get clever and loophole their way into an easy win, it won’t work. You won’t get protested—you’ll just get bumped up a class. Keep it honest, keep it simple, and everyone has a better time.

When you register, you’ll tell us which Time Trials class your car belongs to. Before the event, we’ll handle the rest and assign you to the correct Targa class. Easy.

Targa Competition Scoring

Yes, lap times matter—but Targa scoring rewards more than just outright speed. On-track performance carries the most weight, but engagement, creativity, and team spirit can absolutely move you up the leaderboard.

Being the fastest will help.
Being fully engaged will help more than you think.

Know how to play the game, play it well, and your chances of standing on the top step multiply.

Targa Rules

Rule #1: Targa Is Just for Fun

This is the most important rule. The classing is relaxed, the format is approachable, and the tone is intentionally light. Focus on the experience as much as your lap times and you win—regardless of where you finish.

  • All drivers must have valid driver’s licenses
  • Drivers aged 16–17 are eligible with a completed minor waiver and a parent on the team
  • Only licensed drivers may operate vehicles during any Targa activity

Event Authority

Weather, logistics, eligibility decisions—and yes, even dinner locations—may require adjustments. Final authority for all event decisions rests with the Targa Event Lead, whose decisions are final and binding.

Bottom Line

Targa is competitive, challenging, and wildly fun.
Play fair. Show up engaged. Laugh often.
Enjoy the ride.
