What Is It

Targa is SCCA’s multi‑day, multi‑track experience that blends elements of road trips, road rallies and performance driving into a points-driven challenge. Participants drive their own street-legal vehicle along a planned route, stopping along the way at racetracks to compete in driving competitions. These can include Time Attack Challenges, Time Trials Sprints, and Autocross courses. Points might also be offered at various social activities throughout the journey.

Targa is open to solo drivers, duos, and even teams (as long as everyone has a seat-belt and fits in one car.) Most events last four days and visit four different racetracks.

Overview

Targa runs Wednesday through Saturday morning, with the option (and encouragement!) to stay for the full Tire Rack SCCA® Time Attack Challenge weekend at the final track. Each Targa track day focuses on learning, with a progression through a clear on-ramp of sessions for new drivers.

Paced Laps: 4 laps to learn the layout (with another set before practice for optional driver swaps).

TrackSprint: When the facility allows, we open the day with a TrackSprint: no traffic, a partial/safer section of the course, perfect for new drivers.

Practice Sessions: You get two. Split them however you like between drivers.

Two Competition Sessions:

  • Session 1: Best single lap
  • Session 2: Three‑lap cumulative

In total, teams get six separate on‑track opportunities each day. You can divide them evenly, tailor to comfort/competitiveness, or have one driver run them all.

Short answer? Almost anyone with a valid driver’s license and an appetite for adventure. Targa is built to welcome first-timers and seasoned racers into the same event — just figure out where where you fit!

Every Targa team needs at least two licensed drivers, though you’re welcome to fill every seat in the car with teammates (hint: minivans seat seven!). Split the driving evenly, hand the wheel to your fastest teammate for every session, or divide it up however works for your crew — it’s your call.

You’ll need a valid, state-issued driver’s license. A Time Trials license isn’t required — event officials will help you get one that fits your experience level, at no charge, right at the event.

Drivers who are 16 or 17 are welcome, provided a minor waiver is completed and a parent is on the team.

All Targa participants must be SCCA members. Not a member yet? You can join when you register — no separate step required.

If you’ve never done a track event before, you can absolutely still join us at Targa! Just sign up as a novice. Staff and other competitors will welcome you on board. — and you can always move up to Intermediate or Advanced once you’re ready.

Track Night in America® Experience has you covered!

If competition isn’t the point for you but you still want in on the fun, sign up for Targa’s Track Night in America Experience class. It’s a non-competitive way to run Targa — you’ll get extra track time and a few special awards along the way, with zero pressure to post a fast lap. It also qualifies you for Track Day insurance through Hagerty at a 30% discount.

FAQs

What does Targa need to continue in 2027?

We’re aiming for ~40 entries per event across the four routes. Early sign‑ups help us secure tracks, staff appropriately, and keep the program growing.

Which Targa should I do?

Each Targa route has its own personality, and the schedule will vary by year. Here are examples of some previous Targa events:

  • Tex-ish: Long distances, big tracks, and the least-known bucket-list venue in the country — Hedge Hollow.
  • Southland/Carolina: Roval start, NCCAR in both directions, and the first-ever Targa oval experience at North Wilkesboro.
  • New England: Epic drivers’ tracks (Palmer, LRP), plus the optional Mount Washington Auto Road.
  • Great Lakes: Ferry crossings, Tire Rack HQ shenanigans, and classic Midwest road courses.

If you’d like help choosing a route based on experience level, car type, or travel budget, just ask!

Do both drivers have to set times?

No. Teams can choose who drives each session. A single driver may complete all competitive laps.

How does scoring work?

Scoring is based on timed competition sessions at each track. Drivers/teams accumulate results across multiple days and venues.

What happens if weather interrupts the event?

Targa operates rain or shine. Severe weather adjustments follow standard SCCA safety protocols.
