How Does SCCA Tech Go?

Preparing your race car for an SCCA® Road Racing event requires passing a technical inspection, a critical process that ensures the safety of drivers, competitors, and corner workers. In this video, Scott Schmidt, an SCCA national tech manager, provides an essential guide to the annual inspection procedure. This inspection is mandatory once per year and covers the vehicle from a safety perspective, with the ultimate goal being to help racers get on track safely rather than finding faults.

The inspection covers a comprehensive checklist of components. This includes verifying the vehicle’s logbook, testing essential safety systems like the battery kill switch, and confirming that brake lights and rain lights are fully functional. A significant portion of the inspection is dedicated to crucial safety gear, such as checking seat belts for expiration dates and inspecting the fire suppression system to ensure it is certified and properly pressurized. Furthermore, the inspection covers the fuel system for certification and proper venting, along with verifying that battery terminals are safely covered. Finally, the process examines the car’s exterior, ensuring correct class designation, legible numbers, and the presence of mandated SCCA stickers, all to confirm the vehicle is safely prepared for the upcoming season.
