Joining the SCCA® in 1955, John William Bornholdt quickly found himself in leadership roles, soon overseeing the Giant’s Despair Hillclimb. Known for administering events with an even hand that ensured everyone was treated fairly and with respect, Bornholdt ultimately became a Chief Steward for most of the major SCCA Pro series and the United States Grand Prix as well as countless SCCA road races. Through his hard work and dedication to the sport, Bornholdt became the Stewarding standard by which others were measured.
His passing on Aug. 20, 2025, leaves the Club saddened, but also grateful for Bornholdt’s commitment to excellence in motorsports.
“John’s hard work helped elevate the SCCA’s stature on the world stage,” said SCCA President and CEO Mike Cobb. “From being the founding Regional Executive of the South Jersey Region in the late 1950s to him holding leadership roles in F1, CART, and more, John’s operational excellence in motorsports events knew no limits. This drive led to him receiving many of SCCA’s most prestigious awards, including the Woolf Barnato Award in 1975, the John McGill Award in 1987, and the David Morrell Memorial Award in 1995.”
In 2006, Bornholdt was inducted into the SCCA Hall of Fame — this was only the second year of the Club’s Hall of Fame. His induction into the SCCA Hall of Fame is even more impressive when you consider those who were inducted that year with Bornholdt.
“Denise McCluggage, John Buffum, Grant Reynolds, and Mark Donohue are good company to keep, and show the level John operated at,” added Cobb.
The passion for motorsports continued into his later years, with Bornholdt donating a library of his auto and auto racing articles to the International Motor Racing Research Center (IMRRC), which houses the SCCA Archives.
In 2017, Bornholdt was a featured speaker at the IMRRC, leading a conversation entitled, “From a Steward’s Point of View.” That entire presentation can be viewed on IMRRC’s website.
“Those in the SCCA community are as saddened by John’s passing as they are grateful that he called the Club his home for so many years,” Cobb said. “His contributions have made SCCA what it is today, with the examples he set leading us into continued success for years to come.”
Tiny but mighty, the Street Modified classes are a force to be reckoned with – especially at the Tire Rack SCCA® Solo® National Championships. Double especially at this year’s Sept. 1-5, 2025, Solo Nationals, considering some of the drivers on the entry list. But knowing that more than 1,300 drivers are entered in the event, who will win? We can only guess. And we can ask you to guess.
Thus: Welcome to the Who Will Win the Solo National Championships article for Street Modified, where we told you who we thought would win and asked you to tell us who you thought would win!
When this year’s rock-and-roll themed Solo National Championships takes to Lincoln Airpark in Lincoln, NE, many of us will be watching the Street Mod action. Why? Because the cars are AWESOME, and for many, nothing else matters. From front-wheel-drive wildcards to big horsepower rear-drive mean machines, we love everything about Street Mod.
Here’s where we tell you who we think will win. It’s also where we fully admit we have zero clue who will win…
- SMF: Craig Wilcox
- SM: Cameron Goode
- SML: Jojo Corrales
- SSM: Randall Wilcox
- SSML: Sharon Eberlein
Are we right? Are these drivers the one? Are we the master of puppets? Fans weighed in with the poll below.
Quick note: If we forgot anyone in today’s polls (or in any of the other polls we ran this week), it’s not because we were kinda sleepy when we made the lists (wasn’t long before enter sandman) – just know it’s because we assembled these polls a couple of weeks prior to the Solo Nationals, so the last-minute class shuffling that happens before event registration will fade to black might not be reflected here.
But back to business…

While the Sept. 1-5, 2025, Tire Rack SCCA® Solo® National Championships is careening wildly toward us, at the same time, it can’t get here soon enough. With more than 1,300 drivers getting ready for this year’s rock-and-roll themed Solo National Championships in Lincoln, NE, we don’t think we’re the only ones ready for this near sold-out performance to take center stage.
Let’s get this straight: We’ve not been driven crazy waiting for the Solo Nats. There’s no outright hysteria going on. We’re just saying that it’s time for the event to start already – and with such a great theme, come on, let’s get rocked!
Since we have some time, let’s think about who’s going to rocket to the top in the Prepared category with the results of some member-voted polls, which you’ll find below. But first…
Our Best Guess
Because SCCA’s staff has tons of spare time as we prepare to host this gargantuan event, we decided to also take guesses as to who we think will win. Here’s who made our list:
- XP: Dave Montgomery
- XPL: Holly Schwedler
- CP: Robert Lewis
- CPL: Tracy Lewis
- DP: Todd Roberts
- EP: Patrick Washburn
- FP: Wes Hughson
Now You!
Below are the poll results for who fans think will win in these classes.
These polls hopefully included everyone’s names, but a few may be missing, as last-minute class jumping often leaves us looking the fool (we made these polls a few weeks before the Solo Nats because the poll-making process is incredibly manual).
Check out the others in this series: see more “Who Will Win” results.
