What does the Region Development department do?

Region Development is SCCA®’s primary connector between the National Office and the Club’s 115 Regions. The team plans and executes the SCCA National Convention, supports Divisional Conventions held across the country, manages Region charter execution and review, and serves as the first point of contact for Region leaders on day-to-day operating questions. Abby Scher, Senior Manager of Region Development, leads the department; general questions can go to [email protected].

What is the SCCA National Convention?

The SCCA National Convention is the Club’s premier annual leadership and educational event, bringing together Region leaders, volunteers, officials, competitors, Members, and staff from across the country. Attendees can participate in leadership development, program updates, educational sessions, networking opportunities, and collaborative discussions designed to strengthen Regions and the Club as a whole. The event is free for all SCCA Members.

For current Convention dates, registration information, and event details, visit the National Convention page.

Who should attend the National Convention?

The National Convention isn’t limited to Region officers. Drivers and competitors attend to hear program updates, licensing changes, and event innovations directly from program leaders, while Region leadership and volunteers use the week for leadership development, town halls, and networking with peers from other Regions. Roughly 1,000 members attend each year, representing every part of the Club.

What are Divisional Conventions, and how does Region Development support them?

Divisional Conventions are annual leadership and educational events held after the National Convention, bringing together Region leaders and volunteers within each Division to review the past year, plan ahead, and share ideas with neighboring Regions. Most Divisional Conventions are held in person, with one Division currently offering a virtual convention. Region Development attends and supports these events, with National staff available to answer questions and provide updates on Club programs and initiatives.

For current Divisional Convention dates, locations, and registration information, visit the National Convention page and scroll to the bottom of the page.

What is a Region charter, and why does it matter?

A charter is the Board of Directors’ formal authorization for a Region to operate under the SCCA name, use the Club’s trademarks, and hold members within a defined territory. It confirms a Region is meeting Club standards — a functioning corporation with at least 25 eligible members, an elected governing body, and events run consistent with SCCA’s purpose. Charters are issued annually and must be renewed to stay in good standing.

How does charter renewal work, and what role does Region Development play?

Charters run on the calendar year and are renewed only when the Board is satisfied a Region continues to meet its standards. Region Development reviews Regions ahead of that renewal and supports them through the process — helping leadership understand requirements, flagging gaps early, and connecting Regions with resources before a charter lapses or comes up for Board review.

What happens if a Region falls out of compliance with its charter?

The Board can suspend or revoke a charter if a Region isn’t meeting the standards, provisions, or policies it agreed to. Region Development’s role is to identify and work through issues well before that point — most compliance concerns are resolved through guidance and support rather than formal Board action.

How do I update my Region officers?

Region officer information is managed through the Member Account Portal (MAP). Keeping your officer information current ensures the National Office can communicate with the right leaders and provide access to Region resources.

Where can I find training for Region leaders?

SCCA offers a variety of leadership and educational opportunities throughout the year, including SCCA Academy courses, Marketing Shadow Sessions, Office Hours, Quarterly Region Meetings, Divisional Conventions, and the National Convention.

How does a new Region get started?

A group must organize as a functioning corporation with at least 25 eligible members, an elected governing body, and a plan to hold regular meetings and events consistent with SCCA’s purpose. It also needs approval from the Region currently assigned to that territory, or a successful appeal to the Board of Directors if that approval isn’t granted. Region Development guides prospective groups through the application process to the Board.

What kind of ongoing support does Region Development provide beyond conventions and charters?

The department is a standing resource for Region leadership on day-to-day operating questions — officer transitions, event planning support, understanding Club policy, and general troubleshooting. It also connects Regions to each other and to National programs, so leaders aren’t solving the same problems in isolation.
