SCCA Crowns 20 Time Attack National Champions in Inaugural Event

It was a first for SCCA®, as the Sports Car Club of America™ hosted the inaugural Tire Rack SCCA Time Attack National Championship, where three days of intense competition at Eagles Canyon Raceway in Decatur, TX, culminated in one amazing podium celebration. While SCCA Time Attack has been around in its current form for nearly a decade, the Oct. 22-25, 2026, event marked the first time the Club would crown National Champions – and this event did not disappoint.

While cars didn’t officially hit Eagles Canyon’s 2.7-mile FIA circuit until Friday, Oct. 23, there was action on-site all day Thursday thanks to the Time Attack National Championship (TANC) test day and the Grassroots Motorsports Tire Rack Ultimate Track Car Challenge (UTCC).

UTCC competitors were blazing around the track’s 15 turns all day Thursday, with that competition coming to a close by day’s end. Between UTCC’s sessions, many TANC drivers dialed in their cars for the coming three days of competition.

The weekend’s conditions were what many would call “Chamber of Commerce” weather, dropping into the 60s overnight and peaking in the low 80s. This, combined with partly cloudy skies for much of the event, kept the track fast – as evidenced by the 17 new track records set on Friday and Saturday while TANC ran Eagles Canyon in the counterclockwise direction.

It wasn’t all CCW, though, as mid-day Saturday saw a swap as drivers headed clockwise, setting the fast time that would add to their CCW time to become part of their overall score and determine who would be SCCA’s first Time Attack National Champions.

Superlative Awards

What makes SCCA’s Time Attack program so great is that while everyone is there to compete, they’re also there to have fun with friends. To recognize this, SCCA presents a number of Superlative Awards to celebrate achievements beyond the competition.

Spirit of Time Trials
The Spirit of Time Trials is one of the most important awards presented at the event. This award recognizes the person who upholds the ethos of SCCA Time Attack, which is to bring joy to the sport, be it as a helpful hand when someone needs it the most, spreading the word about the sport, or anything else which shows that motorsports is, first and foremost, a community. This year’s Spirit of Time Trials award was presented to Alan Lani.

Fastest Lap Cup
This Cup places the name of the event’s fastest driver on it. This year’s fastest lap was 1:57.004, posted by Jackie Ding.

Worker’s Choice Award
Presented by Grassroots Motorsports and decided by the workers, Ben Smollen received this award.

Fastest Classic
Presented by Grassroots Motorsports for Classic Magazine. The award goes to the fastest “older” vehicle at the event. At this year’s event, the “classic” was a 1989 Nissan 240SX driven by Mat Beck, who posted a fastest time of 2:01.575.

True Grassroots Award
Presented by Grassroots Motorsports, this award goes to the driver who represents a true grassroots approach to motorsports. This year, Darryl Paul received the honor.

Top Novice
Also presented by Grassroots Motorsports, this award can be presented to a novice who turns the fastest lap time, wins their class, or, while being brand new to the sport, embodies what SCCA Time Attack is all about thanks to their enthusiasm and spirit. This year, James Clem was presented with the award.

Special Thanks

Beyond the event’s participants, coaches, and other volunteers, a special thanks goes to the SCCA partners who helped make not only the 2026 Tire Rack SCCA Time Attack National Championship happen, but also aided in the success of the entire 2026 Tire Rack SCCA Time Attack Challenge season.

The list is long and their contributions many. For starters, the event couldn’t happen without Tire Rack, the Official Tire Retailer of SCCA. Then there is Hawk Performance (the official Brake Products of SCCA), which offered discounts on brake products to all TANC participants; Hagerty (the official Insurance Partner of SCCA), which offered discounts on track insurance; and Sunoco (the Official Fuel of SCCA), which stocked the track with Sunoco 260 GT 100 octane fuel.

Then there’s Grassroots Motorsports, which brought UTCC to the event weekend.

Finally, there are the companies that offered contingency programs at the event, which included Hawk Performance, Öhlins (the Official Suspension System of SCCA), Falken Tires, and Nissan/NISMO.

2027?
