Weida Returns to Runoffs with F6 Title

The Formula 600 field may have missed the 2025 version, but judging by the class performance in the 63rd Mission Foods SCCA® National Championship Runoffs® at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis., it would be hard to tell.

Just like 2024, Calvin Stewart started his No. 07 SabbathTruth.com/Hoosier Novakar Blade Suzuki on the Tire Rack pole. And just like 2024, James Weida made his way past Stewart and earned the National Championship in his No. 22 Weida Apartments/Formula X-1 Scorpion S1 Rotax.

Weida’s win in the final race of the Hagerty Race Days ended behind the safety car under a full-course caution following an incident between Formula F competitors on lap 11 of 13 in the multi-class race. But by the time the caution came out, Weida’s third career National Championship was already well in hand.

Weida and Stewart were poised to trade positions as the race began. Stewart led the opening lap, but the two-stroke Rotax power of Weida’s car moved around Stewart’s four-stroke Suzuki power in Turn 1 of the second lap.

From there, the two heavyweight drivers were ready to slug it out. Stewart turned the fast lap of the race on lap three, then Weida bested it on lap four. Weida got some breathing room on lap five when Stewart, pushing hard, lost five seconds to Weida with a slide and save to keep his car on track.

Behind them was a fierce battle for third place between Sven de Vries’ No. 27 Novakar J9 Suzuki and Jason Martin’s No. 78 Hoosier Novakar J9 Suzuki. Starting fourth and fifth, respectively, both moved around Aaron Ellis at the start.

Martin got all the way to third up the front straight on the opening lap, but de Vries had the position until Martin tried a move in Turn 1 at the start of lap seven. Martin locked his tires on that attempt but grabbed the podium spot from de Vries in Turn 8. As they came back across the start/finish line, de Vries grabbed his spot back in Turn 1.

By then, Ellis had rejoined the rear of that battle in his No. 43 Ellis Motorsports/Hoosier/Hawk Ellis Motorsports AE13 Suzuki. The three-way fight became a fight for second when Stewart spun in Billy Mitchell Bend on lap 10, and ended one lap later with the full course caution.

Weida and the Indianapolis Region scored the victory, followed by de Vries, earning his fourth career podium, and Ellis, with his seventh.

“For me, they saved the best for last, I guess,” Weida said post race. “Calvin and I dueled out for a few laps there and I tried to be consistent. It was a battle there at the beginning. Turn 13 had oil down one lap and I almost lost it but my Hoosier Tires gripped and saved me. It was a great race.”

With his silver medal, de Vries now has four trophies in five Runoffs starts.

“It was a great battle with Jason there,” de Vries said. “Lap after lap after lap, constantly changing positions. It was hard racing, close racing, fair racing. It was exactly why I love it. We had a blast. James unfortunately was in a class of his own so there was no getting him. I am absolutely delighted to get P2.”

Ellis rounded out the podium in third, with Martin fourth, Stewart fifth, and H Cory McLeod sixth. Glen Thielke earned the Sunoco Hard Charger after starting 13th and finishing ninth.
