In a race interrupted by a red flag for a crash on Road America's front straight, Greg Gyann edged Mike Reupert at the line by 0.340sec to take the Prototype 2 (P2) win at the 63rd Mission Foods SCCA® National Championship Runoffs® on the second of two Hagerty Race Days. However, that doesn't describe the fight it took to get there to spray the Mazza sparkling wine on the podium.
Gyann had claimed the Tire Rack Pole in his No. 83 Gycor Filters Stohr WF1 Suzuki with a time of 2:10.606, good for an average speed of 111.38mph around the 4.048-mile circuit. P2 shared a race group with Prototype and Formula Atlantic, with Formula Atlantic taking the green flag first and Prototype and P2 following in a combined start. Reupert got the better start and ended the first lap with the lead, but he didn't hold it, as Gyann took the lead on lap two.
On lap three, John Patrick Witherspoon's P2 car and a stopped Prototype car collided on the front straight under the Mission Foods bridge, and Witherspoon's car came to a stop with damage. A full-course yellow quickly gave way to a red flag while workers cleared the damaged cars and debris. Race officials shortened the race, originally scheduled for 13 laps or 40 minutes, whichever came first, to finish in a two-lap sprint. After an extended delay, all three classes restarted together, with drivers again seeing the green flag, the white flag one lap later and then the checkered flag. At the time of the stoppage, Gyann led Reupert and Matt Strand.
The restart was similar to the start, and the last two laps featured some back-and-forth between Gyann and Reupert. As the starter waved the checkered flag, Reupert was making a hard charge for the win in his No. 7 Sunshine Metals/Hoosier Stohr WF1 Suzuki. Gyann, Reupert and Strand finished in the same order they held at the stoppage.
“I was surprised I got out to a pretty good lead there in the beginning before the stop, and then all that hard work got erased,” said Gyann. “I was able to kind of move back and forth first, second, third, fourth a couple times on the start. I was getting blown away on the start – the restart, and the initial start – but I was able to get him in some of the corners and barely squeaked it out. Congrats to the second- and third-place finishers, especially Mike Reupert. I know he really wanted this one, and I'm happy to beat him, but I'm not happy that he had to lose.”
Reupert was vying for his third championship, and it would have been his first since 1997 had he pulled it off.
“I was coming, but didn't have enough at the end,” Reupert explained. “A little bit of traffic, and I was not all that good on my first lap, especially the first turn as I paid the price. I had the lead coming into 1 and was third coming out of 3. So I had my work cut out for me to get back to the front.
“So I lost to Greg. Greg's good friend of mine. We raced here all summer. I said if I'm going to lose, I'm okay with losing to him. He's a true champion,” he added.
Strand, also in a Stohr WF1 but powered by Kawasaki in his No. 99 HellasEngineering/Friends and Family, had a solid run, moving from ninth-place grid spot to third – and he did it immediately, before the field arrived at Turn 6. Strand claimed the bronze in his second SCCA National Championship Runoffs appearance, his first since 2015 at Daytona International Speedway.
“It was honestly just weaving through the traffic,” he said. “Some guys checked up, trying to be a little hesitant, I tried to take advantage. I know my car is really strong when it's running right, and we've just been struggling all week with it. So it was just put your foot down, weave through the traffic as best we can, and then the seas kind of parted in 5 for me a little bit, and it just happened to work out,” he recounted.
Brian Lindstrand, Richard Colburn, and Peter Shadowen rounded out the top six, with Dale VandenBush earning the Sunoco Hard Charger Award for his run from 10th to seventh.
