The Tire Rack SCCA® Washington DC ProSolo® had a bit of everything – the competition was close, the Lee Piccone-designed courses were excellent, Washington DC Region members were rockstars, and there was a large contingent of ProSolo novices attending the weekend.
The event included an inspiring visit from autocrosser Shane Chinonn, who (while not yet ready to get behind the wheel) spent the day on site, visiting and offering some pointers.
The SCCA Women on Track mentor program was in full effect in DC, with Katrina Funk received coaching from John Vitamvas. Funk’s class of choice was Ladies Class 3, where she battled to sixth in her AST Mazda MX-5 amid tough competition.
Close Competition
The class battles were close. Like, really, really close.
In C Street, Jack Crissey made the most of his runs, swapping the lead on each side with Andrew Aul. In the end, Crissey was 0.029sec ahead for the class victory.
F Street was nearly the same, with Sam Strano’s Ford Mustang ahead of Chad Englert’s Camaro in a muscle car battle by 0.556sec.
Switching categories, A Street Touring was separated by just 0.443sec. Will Teller topped Kevin Wenzel, both piloting Miatas, with Mike Casino just another 0.197sec back in third (and yes, also in a Miata).
C and D Street Touring saw similar battles. Josh Luster led the way in CST over David Graver by less than a half second, both piloting Toyota GR86s. In DST, things were different, but with the same result – John Caserta’s win over Matt Huffman came in just over a half second, but in this class, Caserta was driving a Scion FR-S and Huffman was in a Mazda RX-8.
Stephanie Wells, Tamra Krystinik, and Kate Fisher all took the Ladies class titles, while Eric Peachy topped brother Justin Peachy in CAM.
Check out the complete results for more of the action:
Challenge Battles
The Ladies Class winners were class winners for a reason, with Wells and Krystinik squaring up in the finals. For Wells, the path to the title round went through Evanthe Salisbury and Jen Fox, when Fox suffered a mechanical that took her out of contention. Krystinik drove her Corvette past Jordyn Paul and Amy Houseal to meet up with Wells – where Krystinik took victory.
The Super Challenge hero was Dave Montgomery, who finished third in the F Street battle but made his way into the bracket. Montgomery topped Brian Garfield and Tony Savini to reach the finals, then dumped DJ Alessandrini for the points haul.

Lincoln!
If you don’t know, you’re missing out – but we’re guessing you know.
Memorial Day weekend features a pair of events lovingly dubbed Spring Nationals that spans from May 22 through May 25. There, it’s a Friday/Saturday Tire Rack SCCA ProSolo Series event, followed by a Sunday/Monday Tire Rack SCCA Solo® National Tour. Better yet, it takes place on the Lincoln Airpark concrete in Lincoln, NE, that will host the Tire Rack SCCA ProSolo Finale and Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships in just a few months.
Get there if you can – you won’t regret it.
Can’t make it to Spring Nationals? There are plenty of other National Solo events to enter.
