Run for a Seat on SCCA’s Board of Directors? Yes You Can! But the Deadline is Nearing

On the surface, the Sports Car Club of America® seems like it’s simply an organization that hosts motorsport events. While that’s true, it’s only part of the story. The reality is, the SCCA is a genuine, bona fide club that is run by its members. It’s through the dedication of SCCA members like you that the Club has a legacy of more than 80 years that includes being a recognized motorsport organization on the international scene, with the likes of the IMSA and FIA partnering with the SCCA for a variety of programs.

Without members stepping into leadership roles, the SCCA would have never become what it is today. That’s as true 80 years ago as it is today.

On the National level, members are encouraged to run for seats on the SCCA Board of Directors (BoD), with that Board helping position the Club for future success. Elections are held every year, although not all of the 13 Areas hold elections each year – elections are staggered in order to minimize turnover of the Board.

In 2025, elections for the National SCCA Board of Directors will be held in Areas 2, 6, 10 and 12. The nomination window is already open, with application forms needing to be submitted to the SCCA National Office by Oct. 1. (More on where to find those forms and how to submit them in a moment.)

Why Run for the Board?

It wasn’t long ago that the current SCCA BoD chair Bob Crawford was asking himself that very question. For him, the chance to hold a position on the SCCA Board of Directors was an opportunity to give back and make a contribution.

In a session during the 2024 SCCA National Convention, Crawford, along with two other members of the Board, held a session that spanned a number of topics, including why they ran for a seat on the Board, and what the Board does.

“I started off autocrossing, and then road racing and HPDE,” said Crawford. “It was when I got involved as Member Chair and I started working with other people and helping them [that I came] to appreciate and enjoy what this Club is all about and what this Club has to offer. It really fired something up in me. I’ve been volunteering and providing leadership where I can, contributing skills I happen to have … to make the experience better for everybody, to ensure … that [the Club has] another 80 years in an ever-changing environment.”

While Crawford currently heads SCCA’s BoD as the chair, he’s also representing Area 2, beginning his first term in 2023.

“I thought maybe I might be able to do something, so I raised my hand,” he said of why he originally ran for the seat.

A Strategic Vision

Crawford’s SCCA Area is one of four that is up for election this year, and he’ll be running for reelection. He encourages members to run for a seat on the Board regardless of whether there’s an incumbent in that SCCA Area because, he says, new members on the Board bring fresh perspectives, new ideas, and needed skills.

“Things are not static [in motorsports] – things are constantly changing,” said Crawford. “We need to keep up with that. We need to always be looking ahead and ensure we’re planning for the future of this Club.”

Crawford says that no matter how involved you are with the Club presently, the work you’ll be doing on the SCCA Board of Directors will undoubtedly be different from what you’re used to.

“We have to take a national focus, which was a change [for me],” he said. “I’m used to focusing as a Region Leader on Region activities and Region programs.”

What does focusing on the national level mean? “Staying focused on the big strategic vision, which is so important and is one of the primary roles of the Board,” he said. “Making sure that we’re taking the time to think years out, and trying to find the crystal ball that’s going to tell us what the environment is going to be like.

“The world today is changing faster and faster.”

How Do I Run?

If you’re interested in running for a position on the National SCCA Board of Directors, there are a few things to know. For one, elections run in cycles. In 2025, Areas 2, 6, 10, and 12 are up for election. In 2026, Areas 3, 4, 9, and 11 will be up for election. In 2027, Areas 1, 5, 7, 8, and 13 will hold elections. In 2028, the elections cycle back to Areas 2, 6, 10, and 12, and the process repeats.

Next, your completed “National BoD Election Nomination Form” will need to be submitted to the SCCA National Office by Oct. 1, 2025. That form is found under the General Information tab of SCCA’s File Cabinet (log into the Club’s Member Account Portal, click “Member Resources,” then “File Cabinet”). There, you’ll also find the “SCCA Election Procedures for the Board of Directors” document that covers all of the requirements in greater detail.
