SCCA Prez Cobb Interview Pops Kernels of Race Industry Knowledge

Late last year in early December, the Race Industry Week by EPARTRADE online confab picked the brains of major motorsport movers and shakers during deep-dive video discussions. The list of featured interviewees included motorsport icons like Kyle Larson, Tony Stewart, and Porsche factory driver Patrick Long, as well as IMS President Doug Boles and Trans Am President Andy Lally, along with heavy hitters from IMSA, INDYCAR, NASCAR, NHRA, and (the reason we’re writing about this) SCCA’s very own President and CEO Mike Cobb.

It was the first half of 2017 when Cobb was announced as the President and CEO of SCCA®. At that time, Cobb had been a Club member for nearly 30 years, and brought with him diverse business experience transforming brands, companies, and cultures. His business acumen was put to the test in 2020 during the pandemic, but swift and decisive decisions helped keep the Club together through those tough times.

Almost a decade after taking SCCA’s helm, Cobb’s high-level management skills have served the Club well. His passion for auto racing has grown, too, as well as his connection to the motorsport industry. During that time, he has rubbed elbows with decision makers from all corners of U.S. racing, and he shared some of that intel during a 37-minute chat guided by RACER Magazine’s Laurence Foster.

The Race Industry Week interview was a wide-ranging discussion on the health, momentum, and future direction of grassroots motorsports in the United States. The conversation highlighted record participation across SCCA programs, the continued strength of entry-level motorsports, and new national initiatives designed to expand access for the next generation of racers.
