New Helmets Head to Regions Again Thanks to SCCA Foundation

For a second year, SCCA Foundation has successfully executed its Loaner Helmet grant program providing SCCA Regions with brand-new helmets at substantial cost savings. In fact, nearly 185 Snell SA2020 open-face helmets were received by 20 Regions in 2022.

Arnie Coleman, Executive Director of the SCCA Foundation, explained that the concept for the SCCA Foundation Loaner Helmet initiative was to provide Regions with new helmets that could be loaned to those new to the sport at autocrosses or for on-track ride-alongs. That gives people just learning about SCCA activities the chance to experience motorsports without making a significant initial investment in the hobby.

“We realized Snell 2005 loaner helmets utilized by many Regions were nearing their expiration date for SCCA events,” Coleman said. “Purchasing new helmets at retail prices can cause Regions some heartache. So, SCCA Foundation stepped in and helped since one of our goals is to enrich lives through participation in motorsports activities for the benefit of SCCA members, their communities, and the general public.”

The RaceQuip model OP2020 helmets, now distributed by Holley Performance, meet SCCA requirements for the next decade. They were offered to SCCA Foundation this year at a cost of $229 apiece before shipping. With funding provided by SCCA Foundation, Regions were able to purchase the helmets at only $100 each plus shipping. In all, this SCCA Foundation program has distributed nearly 585 helmets over two years.

According to Jeff Jacobs, Chairman of SCCA Foundation, the hope is to continue the Loaner Helmet assistance program in 2023. However, to get the lowest possible price per helmet, SCCA Foundation must usually place an order for at least 200 units. So, Regions wanting to avail themselves of this fantastic opportunity need to express their interest in advance. Appropriate representatives from Regions should contact SCCA Region Communication/Training/Events Manager Abby Scher at ascher@scca.com to learn more about the process.
