GM Joins World Challenge GT Manufacturers’ Championship

TOPEKA, Kan. (April 22, 2009) €“ WC Vision is pleased to announced that General Motors has joined the 2009 SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge GT Manufacturers€™ Championship Presented by RACER Magazine.Thanks to support from its competitors fielding Chevrolet Corvettes and Pontiac GTOs, General Motors has been added to the 2009 World Challenge GT Manufacturers€™ Championship in search of its seventh World Challenge title.€œGeneral Motors has long supported the series and has many teams that will continue to support its brands,€ Whelen Motorsports Team Owner Sonny Whelen said. €œEveryone is familiar with the current situation with auto manufacturers in Detroit, and some of the GM faithful in the series have banded together to meet the series requirements for the Manufacturers Championship in 2009.€Chevrolet currently leads the World Challenge record books for most manufacturer class wins, with 65, and the Corvette leads the ledger for model class victories, with 41. GM has collected six World Challenge Manufacturers€™ Championships with three different marques (Chevrolet, Saturn and Cadillac) since the series began in 1990.Though Chevrolet will earn points for the podium finishes of Eric Curran at Sebring and Long Beach, as a consequence of joining the Manufacturers€™ Championship following Round Two of the 2009 season, the marque has been charged a points penalty agreed upon by the four other manufacturers: Ford, Porsche, Viper and Volvo.
