Other Awards

During the final gathering at the Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships on Friday afternoon/evening, a few more awards and trophies were presented before everyone hit the road for home. Those included:

Rothney-Kozlak Cup: Kim Whitener (sixth in E Street Touring; second time receiving this award)
This award is presented annually to the top finishing female driver participating in a championship-eligible Open class at the Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships. The recipient will either have the widest margin of victory in an Open class (if one or more female drivers win) or the closest margin to the winner of an Open class (if no female driver wins an Open class championship) regardless of where she placed in the class. The cup is named in honor of Lynne Rothney-Kozlak for her leap of faith into open class competition at the SCCA Solo National Championships in 1994, decades of sustained competition in Open classes, and mentoring other women to advance their driving skills in SCCA Solo.

Bob Woods Cup: Steven Tang, UTA Racing
The Formula SAE class at the Solo Nationals is a supplemental class that allows college students who work hard at their programs the opportunity to test their speed against other colleges. The final piece of that puzzle is a capable driver, and the Bob Woods Award recognizes the quickest college student driver in the class.

Kiesel Guitars Top PAX Award: Rob Clark, D Street Prepared
Top PAX runners on each series of days (Tuesday/Wednesday and Thursday/Friday) earn a custom guitar from Kiesel Guitars, valued in excess of $4,000 each.

Small Fortune Racing FTD Award: Trent Ksionek, B Modified

Alice Cooper knew it: speed and sound come alive Under My Wheels. The Tire Rack SCCA® Solo® National Championships performance Sept. 1-5, 2025, in Nebraska’s capital city of Lincoln has plenty of wheels, speed, and sound. That’s why this year’s rock ‘n’ roll themed event has, well, rocked!

It’s a cool and breezy Friday on the 100 acres of cement at Lincoln Airpark, but The Heat is On as a second set of participants take one last shot at setting best times to earn National Championships. The eventual winners will be lauded later this evening in the Tire Rack Event Center (TREC) VIP Backstage Tent to close out festivities.

This is the 52nd running of Solo Nats. Lincoln has been home to the event since 2009, but the gathering of Solo all-stars has been conducted at multiple venues over the years. No surprise, the activity has developed quite a history, with some interesting stats unveiled below.

Chart Topping Solo Statistics

Like Casey Kasem (or Ryan Seacrest, depending on your generation), we’re counting down the hits from Tire Rack Solo Nationals.

For this first one, we’re going to a time when a man made famous by Hollywood was president. All the leaves were brown, and the skies were gray for some across the country who were left California Dreamin’. The year was 1984, and the San Francisco Region brought home 16 National Championships from Solo Nationals — still a record. That’s part of the 2,702 (and counting) National championship trophies handed out over 52 years.

Speaking of hits, one artist has strung together more consecutive number one hits than any other. Nicole Wong entered 2025 riding an active streak of 13 chart toppers and just this week added another, in Super Street Ladies, for a record 14 in a row. The highest-ranking man on the list is Jeff Kiesel, who had 12 chart toppers in a row from 2006 to 2017, is currently on another five-hit streak.

But a true hit comes down to more than just a singer, there’s a whole team behind the platform. The best producer at Solo Nationals is Chevrolet, collecting 371 wins over the years. The highest ranking model? The Corvette, with 241. Second on the list is Mazda with 338, and the darling MX-5/Miata with 200.

The Randy Pobst farewell tour has brought a number of new titles along with the old hits, but one that he still owns is ‘most years between two wins.’ He took the top of the G Street charts in 1986, then waited all the way until 2018 for another in F Street Prepared. Wonder where he was in between?

But the most successful crossover artist of all time is undoubtedly Patty Tunnell. The dark-haired Colorado superstar has 15 chart topping tunes. They’ve come in an incredible 11 different classes.

Rubber Meets the Road at Lincoln Airpark

The Nationals Test ‘N’ Tune Presented by Vitour course is always a hotbed of activity the first three days of Solo Nats. Located mid-paddock on the western edge of the property, the short circuit is abuzz from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day, with a short break early in afternoons. Competitors from all classes, in nearly every make and model car imaginable, sign up for specific times to use the Test ‘N’ Tune circuit managed by SCCA’s Nebraska Region. It gives drivers a chance to get reacquainted with their cars, Lincoln Airpark’s cement surface, or new setups before jam sessions go down on the main courses to decide the year’s SCCA National Champions.

On Thursday, however, the time for testing was over as the last set of participants had begun official efforts to claim Solo Nats trophies. Instead of letting that plot of land lay fallow, the course’s presenting sponsor took it over and Let the Good Times Roll during the Vitour Test ‘N’ Tune Challenge.

Dallas Reed, Vitour’s U.S. Market Director, said drivers whose cars were fitted with Vitour rubber got four timed runs on the course to see who could turn the quickest time. Those who showed up on other rubber were given the option to borrow loaner wheels equipped with Vitour products so they could join the fun. They could also run the course on their current tires to see the difference between those and the Vitours, but only the Vitour laps counted toward the competition.

Up for grabs was a five-foot trophy topped with a miniature swordfish. Why so tall? “I just wanted to get a comically big trophy because, well, why not?” Reed laughed. “We’re here to have fun!”

The fastest time went to a ’67 Chevrolet Camaro built and owned by Mark Sawatsky. However, the driver of the car for this outing was 12-time National Champion Jeff Cashmore, who was looking for an excuse to give the beautiful, classic muscle car a go around cones.

Beyond having fun, the Thursday session was also used by Vitour to test two of its new semi-slick products under development. Two representatives from Vitour headquarters in China were in Lincoln to witness the testing and take in the whole Solo Nats experience.

While a Vitour product was available for Solo use in 2023, it’s really just this year that the tire manufacturer has made a major push into SCCA Solo, with another product under development that caters to short-run events such as autocrosses or hill climbs.

Vitour sponsored Challenges during Tire Rack SCCA ProSolo® Series events held this year. Of course, there are lots of tire manufacturers who support SCCA Soloists throughout the year and at Solo Nats. Along with Vitour, a Whole Lotta Love also goes to SCCA tire partners Goodyear, Falken, and Hoosier. These manufacturers could be spotted in the paddock this week, with Solo Performance Specialties on site in partnership with R&S Racing to support service for both Vitour and Hoosier.

Speaking of Rock ‘N’ Roll Dance Partners

Like any huge rock ‘n’ roll concert, there are lots of people needed to make it happen. For the SCCA that list includes its valued partners. As such, a giant ‘thank you’ goes to Tire Rack as the longtime Official Tire Retailer of SCCA. Tire Rack has supported SCCA since 1995, which technically makes them a member of the Solo Nationals Silver Circle.

Then there’s Hagerty, the Official Insurance Partner of SCCA since 2019; and Hawk Performance, the Official Brake Products of SCCA since 2003. Thanks also goes to Sunoco, the Official Fuel of SCCA since 2001, which is coursing through the systems of many competition and tow vehicles throughout the paddock.

Mazda Motorsports is part of this rock ‘n’ roll experience, too, with support for competitors in many ways, including sponsorship of Monday’s SCCA Women on Track Brunch.

And of course, none of this happens without all the passionate SCCA members that pull off this amazing event each year, not to mention the members who come to compete at the Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships. Thank you one and all!
