Looking for an added challenge, Michael Varacins made a switch to Formula Continental® (FC) in 2019 after earning seven career SCCA National Championships in Formula Vee®. On Friday, Oct. 4, 2024, at Road America, the Chicago Region SCCA member completed his goal of winning another Runoffs title, clinching the FC gold medal during the Sept. 28-Oct. 6, 2024, 60th anniversary SCCA® National Championship Runoffs® presented by Sunoco.

Varacins and his No. 65 Speed Sport Engineering/Pepperball Van Diemen F2000/Ford secured the win when Tire Rack Pole winner and then-leader Tim Minor pulled his No. 88 Hoosier/Ski Motorsport Citation US2000 off course in Turn 1 with just three laps to go while the two were battling.

Though the official lap chart will show just one lead change at the start/finish line, Varacins and Minor swapped positions five total times through the race. Each of those came after a safety car and ensuing lap nine restart, and followed again on lap 10, where Varacins swept to the lead through Turn 1 and Minor retook the lead in either Turn 5 or Turn 6 each time.

The next time across the stripe, Varacins was charging up the front stretch in yet another repeat when Minor pulled off course with damage to his left front wheel. That brought up the full course caution that carried the field the remaining three laps to the checkered flag.

“Road America has always been pretty good to me,” Varacins said. “It’s a class that suits my driving style. I love being here. It’s just a fantastic place to be. It’s been a long road. It took longer than I thought it would take, it was a lot of work. Not just myself, but my dad and the sacrifices on my family. I don’t think I would be happy with the rest of my life if I never got one of these. I feel like I could just breathe a big sigh of relief and whatever happens in my racing career, I’m probably OK with it … The weight that’s off my shoulders feels like the whole car is off of me at this point.”

It confirmed that Varacins, who works with a small team in his family shop rather than a large, established motorsports prep shop, made the right decision in taking on the challenge.

“Some of these guys have been doing this for a very long time,” he said. “It’s a massive learning curve. The sacrifices are massive. We don’t have a full-time guy working on the car, so it’s evenings and weekends. Unfortunately when you do that, you lose the family time. So, my hat’s off to them, I owe my daughter a lot and I’m just glad we could pull this off.”

Though Varacins took the victory under yellow, Central Florida Region’s Rob Allaer was hoping for one more chance to challenge for his third career victory in his No. 52 National Coney/LTD Motorsports Van Diemen F2000/Ford. Allaer moved from third on the grid to second place in the opening five corners before Varacins moved back around him on lap three. He fell back to fourth on the mid-race restart before reclaiming third going into Turn 8 and inherited second place, his seventh career podium and fourth silver medal when Minor dropped out.

“It was a classic FC race,” Allaer said. “Tim Minor is the class of the class. He was so fast all week. At the start I got a great jump but, unfortunately, I was at the wrong part of Turn 1. You can’t get through there like that without taking out everybody and I wasn’t going to ruin everyone’s race. I slowed down and [bided] my time. When we got to the restart, it was a great race from there. The guys were telling me in my ear that I had a little bit of pace on him, but Mike Varacins is a champion eight times over, and there’s a reason for that. My hope was that when we got that full course caution that I’d have a chance to get a jump, but you never know. I’m very happy for him.”

Brian Tomasi was thrilled that the race was only 13 laps as his No. 96 Hoosier/Subway Van Diemen RF01/Ford shut off on the cool down lap, but it hung on long enough to secure his seventh career podium. The Chicago Region member was a National Champion in 2004 and 2010 before a break from motorsports following the 2011 season. Sporadic appearances at the Runoffs left him hunting for more, but it all came together on Friday at Road America. Tomasi started fourth and battled with Allaer for the podium, where they both landed after the final incident.

“I’ve been racing with these guys all year,” Tomasi said. “We all wanted it, we were all pushing. It was tough. I was hoping something was going to happen at the front. I lucked out in third, but I’ll take it. I haven’t been on the podium since 2011. I got out of racing for a little while and had a tough few years. To be back on the podium means everything. We work so hard for this.”

Dean Kiriluk and Rockford Beauchamp crossed the stripe with fourth- and fifth-place finishes behind the safety car. It was a successful first Runoffs appearance for Kiriluk and a career best for Beauchamp, with Douglas Rocco finishing sixth and taking home the Sunoco Hard Charger after starting ninth.

Taking place Sept. 28-Oct. 6, 2024, at Road America in Plymouth, WI, the entire Super Touring® Under (STU) field during the 60th anniversary SCCA® National Championship Runoffs® presented by Sunoco showed skilled determination as the 13-lap race around Road America’s 4.048-mile, 14-turn circuit went green-to-checker, allowing racers and fans alike to enjoy a full — and fast — race.

Thomas Noble started on the Tire Rack Pole in his No. 72 Precision Motor Sports BMW 330i, although second-place qualifier (and defending STU National Champion) Chip Herr had logged a time that wasn’t too far behind, as had third-place qualifier Darin Treakle. All said, 0.681sec covered the top three’s qualifying times.

Starting fourth was David Fiorelli, who was running a unique offset rear wing on his Ford Mustang, designed to optimize downforce through the right-sweeping Carousel.

Hagerty Race Day for STU came Friday afternoon on Oct. 4, and when the Mazda pace car pulled into the pits and the starter waved the green flag, the field’s 17 drivers hammered down.

Noble held the inside line into Turn 1, forcing Herr to file in line. The top two quickly pulled a gap on the field, with Herr getting a strong run through the Kink, but Noble fired back, building a 1.5sec gap within just a few laps. Noble’s advantage kept growing, soon adding one to two seconds per lap to his advantage over Herr.

Halfway through the race, Treakle found himself fending off Jose Osiris Peña for third — and they were fast. Yes, Treakle and Peña couldn’t keep Noble’s pace, but they were chipping away at the gap to Herr. There was the potential for the two to catch Herr when John Schmidt suffered a mechanical issue exiting the Carousel, but that only brought out a brief local yellow, so Susquehanna Region member Herr was able to bring his No. 1 Carbotech/Hoosier/Warwick/Autopark Audi A4 across the line second unchallenged.

The final lap for Treakle and Peña was intense, with Peña applying more and more pressure. Peña challenged into Turn 5, and once again into Canada Corner, but it wasn’t enough (to the tune of 0.048sec at the stripe), allowing Washington DC Region member Treakle to cross the finish line in third place in his No. 70 BMW 325 — earning his first Runoffs medal.

In post-race inspection, Noble was disqualified, moving Herr into first, Treakle to second, and putting Peña, a Puerto Rico Region member, in third in his No. 199 Honda CRX.

Herr was excited about his finish. “I want to thank Hoosier and Carbotech and Motion Control — it’s a team effort and we love coming here and I love to drive this car,” Herr said after the race. “I know [the race] was a little boring, but I didn’t want to be part of a highlight reel hitting the wall this year.”

Treakle, too, enjoyed the race, noting it was better than his 2023 Runoffs experience where mid-race contact took him out of contention. “It was a lot of fun,” he said of this year’s unrelenting battle. “I think [Peña] backed it down a little bit mid race to let the tires cool to make another run at the end — but it was a good, fair race.”

With the post-race adjustments, Fiorelli moved up to a fourth-place finish, with Jorge Nazario in fifth. The Sunoco Hard Charger award went to Edwin Soto-Quinones, who started 17th and finished 12th.

After swapping top times over three days of qualifying, Chuck Mathis and Jesse Prather started side-by-side in Friday afternoon’s H Production (HP) race, just one of 26 events taking place over three Hagerty Race Days as part of the 60th anniversary SCCA® National Championship Runoffs® presented by Sunoco at Wisconsin’s Road America.

The HP contest had Mathis on pole in the No. 54 Hoosier/AMT Performance Engines Volkswagen Rabbit after setting a qualifying lap record, which garnered him the Tire Rack Pole Award. Prather, however, was out in front of the 19-car field in the No. 34 JPM/Sunoco/Hoosier/Carbotech/Amsoil Mazda 2 after Turn 1 once the green flag flew.

Prather and Mathis were close together — often nose to tail — for the rest of the 13-lap race around the 4.048-mile, 14-turn circuit. Early on, Steve Sargis and his No. 18 Hoosier/Carbotech Triumph Spitfire was in the mix too, but slowly fell away from the lead two as the race progressed.

Both Prather and Mathis are masters of their craft. Prather, from SCCA’s Kansas Region, has previously won Runoffs gold medals in E Production and F Production. Mathis owns a Runoffs victory, too, in the now defunct G Production class. The combined experience of the two produced a fascinating and fun race for spectators trackside and watching online.

Prather’s car was quick in some sections while Mathis’ machine was fast out of corners and down straights. The result was an accordion effect as Prather pulled away at times only to be reeled back in by Mathis lap after lap.

On the final lap, Mathis knew he was out of time and had to make a move. Going into Canada Corner, Mathis moved alongside Prather on the inside. The two drivers touched, but Prather managed to scoot away with the lead, which quickly became a victory — but only by .206sec over Mathis.

The victory is a seventh Runoffs Championship for Prather, who now has a gold medal for every Production class currently included in SCCA National Runoffs competition — E Production, F Production and H Production.

“It was a great race,” Prather said after the contest. “I haven’t had that good of a back-n-forth race like that at the Runoffs since … the last time I raced Steve Sargis or Brian Linn in 2006 or 2007.

“What a balance between two cars that do things better in different ways,” Prather continued about the day’s battle. “I had him on the backside, then he was catching me in places that were just boggling my mind. So, I had to play a lot of protection in that race. But it was really good racecraft; that is why I race is because of races just like this.”

While Mathis came home second for his third silver medal at the Runoffs, he was equally enthused about what transpired today at America’s National Park of Speed.

“I pushed as hard as I could,” Mathis admitted. “He’s got better corners, and I’ve got better corners. I had to make that last attempt and that’s all there was to it. Jesse was an awesome guy to race with and it’s a bummer we got together. But it was just hard racing; it wasn’t being stupid.”

Sargis easily waltzed home in third, about 26 seconds behind the lead battle. With 40 Runoffs starts now to his credit, Sargis has landed on the victory podium 23 times — a feat that isn’t shabby by any measure.

“I’m just glad to be here and I’m glad the car stayed together,” Sargis said afterwards. “I didn’t have to work on the car that much … and the car actually ran better today than it did all week.”

Behind the top three, Chris Albin and Matt Brannon were having a great tussle to see who’d finish fourth. Albin — in a Volkswagen Golf — held that position for the first half of the race, but Brannon — in a Fiat X-1/9 — meticulously hunted him down until lap seven. At that point he passed Albin in Canada Corner and held the fourth spot to the checkered flag.

That said, Albin didn’t fall far off Brannon’s bumper, hoping to take the spot back before having to settle for fifth just .196sec behind Brannon.

The Sunoco Hard Charger award went to Joe Camilleri in the No. 06 Volkswagen Scirocco for starting 17th and finishing in the 11th position.

After three silver medals in his first three starts, Charlie Peter earned a long-awaited Touring 2 victory on Friday at the 60th Anniversary SCCA National Championship Runoffs presented by Sunoco. Peter drove his No. 66 Phenix Label/Hoosier BMW M2CS Cup to a 10.504-second victory over 13 laps at America’s National Park of Speed.

The Kansas City Region member battled early with Tire Rack Polesitter and six-time champion Kurt Rezzetano. Peter marched his BMW around the No. 37 Phoenix Performance/Hoosier/Hawk Chevrolet Corvette of Rezettano on the opening lap, but the Corvette moved back to the lead on lap two.

Peter pounced again in Turn 5 on lap five, making the final pass for the lead and building a gap when Rezzetano slid wide in an attempt to keep up.

“I felt great about the first one,” Peter said. “I never thought I would be on the podium. The next year I thought I had a chance and I could do it. I was happy with second place, but the third year I wanted to win and got second again. I let a year go by and really focused, dialed everything in, and here I am now. Finally.”

The win makes Peter a second-generation National Champion, as his father, Hans Peter, earned three of his own.

“He’s still got three,” Peter said. “I’ve got a chance to get another [in GT-2 on Sunday] but he’s on the pole for a race tomorrow so we’ll see if I can catch up!”

Rezzetano’s second place finish was the ninth podium of his career and broke a streak of three consecutive victories in the class. Though the class had just eight entries, it was small but mighty; seven of the drivers combined had 77 podiums and 27 Runoffs wins.

“For where we were this year, and not racing that much — I didn’t run any T2 this year [during the regular season],” Rezzetano said after using his champion’s provisional to enter the race. “Taking a 20-year-old car against a new BMW, it was expected that we would run out of tire and brakes first. I ran it for all it had until I went off in Turn 6 trying to keep up with him. He put on a great drive. It was a clinic. He made no mistakes at all, so congrats to him.”

Mark Boden crossed the line third in his No. 46 Fall-Line Motorsports Porsche 911 to earn his 23rd podium and his second of the day after moving around Jason Ott’s Porsche 911 Carrera on lap five, then holding off Ott to the finish. That move made Boden the Sunoco Hard Charger as well after starting on row three of the grid.

“It was a great battle with Jason in a car I actually finished second in at VIR some years ago,” Boden said. “I know the car well, and he drove great. It was just good, clean hard racing. Once I got by Jason he was pressuring me, and finally I started inching away from him a little bit and got a comfort zone.”

John Heinricy crossed the line in his Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing behind Ott to finish fifth.

This year’s 45-car Spec Miata race during the 60th anniversary SCCA® National Championship Runoffs® presented by Sunoco — held Sept. 28-Oct. 6, 2024 at Road America — was a unique one. On the Tire Rack Pole sat 15-year-old New England Region member Ethan Goulart in his No. 72 SCDA/Krugspeed/Kessler/Hoosier/Mazda Spec Miata — son of multi-time Runoffs Champ Elivan Goulart. Starting second was Dad himself, and in an even more fascinating turn of events, both qualified with a time of 2:41.106, with the tiebreaker being the second-fastest lap turned in qualifying. Elivan was also splitting Friday track duties between pro race qualifying in Indianapolis in the Pirelli GT4 America series and SCCA’s Spec Miata National Championship race. Starting alongside his son in the Spec Miata race was important to Elivan, so he found a friend with a plane that sat ready to take him from Indianapolis to nearby Sheboygan, WI, for the start of the Spec Miata race. Elivan pulled off the journey with 30 minutes to spare.

Another factor that made this race unique was the absence of class frontrunners Jim Drago, Charles Mactutus, and Danny Steyn. Those drivers were involved in an incident in the Kink during qualifying, sending all three to the hospital and forcing them to miss the race. Steyn would have started third, Mactutus fourth, and Drago sixth.

And all of that happened before the green flag flew around 1 p.m. CT on Oct. 4, the first of three Hagerty Race Days at the 2024 Runoffs.

With the Goularts on the front row, Preston Pardus assumed the third position on the grid, followed by Noah Harmon, Bob Stretch, Logan Stretch, Alex Bertagnoli, Todd Buras, Chris Haldeman, and Nicholas Bruni rounding out the top 10.

The race kicked off with a bang — quite literally — as Jonathan Davis and Tyler Brown tangled shortly past start/finish on the first lap, catapulting them to either side of the track. The bulk of the field made it through, though, and racing continued — with Ethan Goulart in the lead. Buras didn’t make it far around the 4.048-mile, 14-turn circuit before getting shuffled into the grass and deep into the gravel at Turn 3.

This led to a full-course caution. Quick work got Buras back on track without losing a lap, but he couldn’t catch up to the pack before the restart.

That third-lap, single-file restart saw Ethan Goulart leading Elivan, with Harmon, Stretch, Pardus, and more in tow. All cars made it through Turn 1, although Elivan and Harmon did rub fenders by Turn 3.

While Elivan Goulart dropped back, Ethan hammered down, leading a three-car breakaway pack of himself, Harmon, and Logan Stretch. Bob Stretch headed up the second grouping, followed by Pardus, Elivan Goulart, and more. By the end of lap four, Pardus had pushed by Bob Stretch, and Elivan Goulart followed with the front trio seeing a near-three-second lead.

Halfway into the race, Ethan Goulart and Harmon had worked together to place Logan Stretch in a 2.5sec deficit, making this a two-car duel to the checker.

The race for third turned into a three-car battle, with Pardus soon leading that group into the second half of the race, followed by Elivan Goulart, Brett Kowalski, and Logan Stretch. On lap eight, Pardus dropped a few spots, gifting third to Elivan Goulart. Starting the next lap, Harmon made the pass on Ethan Goulart into Turn 1, with Ethan not defending.

With three to go, Ethan Goulart passed Harmon into Turn 5 — and once again, the duo played well, making for a clean pass that didn’t cost the pair time over the ensuing pack.

On lap 11, the second pack fanned three wide in the same turn with multiple drivers struggling to woah their cars. Elivan Goulart made the most of the battle, jumping back into third, now with Barroso pushing his back bumper.

The final of 13 laps saw challenge after challenge throughout the field, but Ethan Goulart had amassed a 0.7sec lead — too much for 18-year-old Harmon to overcome.

Turn 5 presented countless challenges for the second pack, with Pardus initially moving into third before Elivan Goulart overtook him to claim the position. Then Barroso, Stretch, and Kowalski challenged. At the checker, it was 15-year-old Ethan Goulart with the win, followed by Harmon and then Pardus over Elivan Goulart for the bronze by a margin of 0.046sec. Barroso closed out the top five 0.067sec later.

“I was pulling away a little bit in the beginning — I think [Dad] fell back, and then I just tried to get my head down,” Ethan explained of the race. “Then Noah pushed me along, and once we got that gap, I looked back and then a couple laps later, they started to catch us again. I didn’t know Noah was going to go by, and then they’re catching us even more. I was like, all right, I’ve got to the lead now — I put some flyers down and that’s what we did. And we came home with the win.”

At 15 years and 174 days old, Ethan became the youngest driver to win the SCCA Runoffs, beating the previous youngest winner (Neil Verhagen) by 68 days.

It turns out, Harmon’s mid-race pass on Ethan Goulart for the lead was an attempt to get the two further from the ensuing pack. “I started to see the guys behind catch up, so it’s like, we need to try something different,” Harmon, a Central Florida Region member, said of the pass in his No. 99 Streetside Classic/Autotechnik Spec Miata. “I went to lead, [but] I think it actually slowed us down a bit, but I wanted to try it. But yeah, it was a fantastic drive.”

For Pardus, a Central Florida Region member, early contact possibly knocked his No. 42 East Street Racing/PR Spec Miata out of alignment, slowing his speed. But for him, the race was about his missing teammate, fellow racers, and friends Jim Drago, Danny Steyn, and Charles Mactutus.

“It’s been a rough week,” Pardus said, swallowing tears. “I’ve got to thank Jim [Drago] and all the East Street guys — I mean, I wouldn’t be where I’m at in this class without Jim, and even Danny [Steyn]. I mean, he really helped me a lot.”

The Sunoco Hard Charger Award went to Charlie Campbell, who started 47th and finished 25th.

Andrew Aquilante, from SCCA’s Philadelphia Region, won the last three Touring 1 (T1) National Championship races coming into this year’s 60th anniversary SCCA® Runoffs® presented by Sunoco taking place Sept. 28-Oct. 6, 2024, in Wisconsin on Road America’s 4.048-mile, 14-turn circuit.

In the No. 33 Phoenix Performance/Hoosier/Hawk Ford Mustang, Aquilante started on the T1 pole for the event after earning his 22nd Tire Rack Pole Award Thursday. On Friday — the first of three Hagerty Race Days — Aquilante immediately fired out to take the T1 lead. From that point, he was never challenged and was first to the checkered flag 13 laps later with a 15-second margin of victory.

“It was a nice Friday morning drive on a crisp, fall day at America’s National Park of Speed,” a subdued Aquilante said to describe the victory which now counts as his 15th Runoffs gold medal. “It was a nice day weather wise, the track was quick, and we kept it between the lines.”

Behind Aquilante at the start was James Candelaria in a Chevrolet Corvette. He gave chase for a bit but spun his car on lap three coming through Billy Mitchell Bend. That promoted to second the No. 44 Mercedes Benz AMG GT4 of Tony Ave, who was being chased by Mark Boden in the No. 46 Fall-Line Motorsports Mercedes Benz AMG GT4.

Ave expanded the gap back to Boden as laps ticked away, and ultimately earned the runner-up step on this year’s T1 podium. That’s Ave’s third silver medal at the Runoffs, and he also received the race’s Sunoco Hard Charger award for starting third and finishing second.

“I ran the thing as hard as I could just to see what the tires would be like throughout the whole race because we’re kind of new at this class,” Ave said afterwards. “But halfway through I about put it off the road twice. I know the car owner was watching at home … so I thought I’d better keep the thing on the road and just finish second.”

Nearly 10 seconds behind Ave, Boden drove uncontested to the third and final podium spot. That now makes 10 Runoffs silver medals for Boden in 41 starts at SCCA’s National Championship event.

“I love going to the Runoffs and being up here on the podium with such veteran guys who have won so many National Championships,” Boden said.

After the spin, Candelaria charged back to race with Hugh Stewart for the fourth finishing spot. On lap 11, Candelaria got by Stewart in Turn 6 to secure the spot. Stewart then finished fifth in a BMW E46 M3.

Florida Region member Peter Shadowen held off multi-time Champion Chris Bovis on Friday morning at Road America to etch his name in the record book as the 2024 GT-Lite winner at the SCCA® National Championship Runoffs® presented by Sunoco.

Shadowen’s No. 72 Road N Race/Goodyear Honda CRX started on the Tire Rack Pole but by Turn 5 had fallen behind 10-time Champion Michael Lewis. That lasted until lap three when he moved back to the point, but had the pesky No. 178 Hart Marx Advisors/Goodyear Honda CRX of Bovis in his mirrors for the duration.

Ultimately, Shadowen’s slight horsepower advantage up the final straight to the checkered flag pulled the now six-time class Champion to a 0.328sec victory in the 13-lap race on the first of three Hagerty Race Days to crown Sports Car Club of America’s Road Racing National Champions at Road America in Elkhart Lake, WI, during the Sept. 28-Oct. 6 event.

The 2024 gold medal is his third in the past five seasons.

“It feels awesome to get another win,” Shadowen said. “Honestly, this morning I was probably more nervous than I’ve ever been because I knew it was going to be a tough one. There were several key players, including Chris, that had potential, but he was my main concern. It’s definitely a lot of work.”

Bovis gave everything his CRX had, which runs in a front-wheel-drive configuration versus Shadowen’s rear-wheel-drive car, but didn’t have enough for the race winner. Like the leader, he moved around Lewis’ early move on lap three, and it was soon just the duo left at the end.

The race looked temporarily like it could be a repeat of Bovis’ 2013 victory, where he used a run through the final Turn 14 to the checkered flag to win the race by 0.007sec in a photo finish, the second closest finish in Runoffs history.

“I had to slightly modify that strategy,” Bovis said. “It would have had to have been going into 14, because I just don’t have the horsepower over Peter to get it going up the straight. I had two shots at it, but I would have ended up in his door, and we don’t need that.”

Instead, he settled in for his seventh career Runoffs podium.

Defending National Champion Graham Fuller had begun to catch up to Lewis by mid race but inherited third for good when Lewis pulled off with a mechanical issue on lap eight. The finish gave Fuller a third career podium and a complete set of trophies, along with his past victory and silver medal.

“The start of the race, Brian Linn was right on me and we traded back and forth for a while,” Fuller said. “Then I was following Lewis for a while and thought we could work together, but he [pulled off track] in Canada Corner and I was all by myself out there.”

Linn finished fourth, followed by James Gregorious in fifth. Noel Hayward worked his way from 13th on the grid to ninth at the finish to earn the Sunoco Hard Charger Award.

Formula F (FF) has long been a place for rookies to prove their mettle, and the 60th anniversary SCCA® National Championship Runoffs® presented by Sunoco, taking place Sept. 28-Oct. 6, 2024, at Road America put an exclamation point on that fact, with Runoffs rookies sweeping the FF podium.

But before there could be a rookie celebration, they had to get past everyone else — then they had to sort out which positions each of them would get.

Starting on the Tire Rack Pole was 19-year-old Calvin Kautz. While 2024 marked Kautz’s third appearance at the National Championship event, until this year, his best starting position had been fifth. In 2024, he earned the pole with a time of 2:22.552 — although it should have come as no surprise, as his father Tim is a perennial class frontrunner. All told, Tim has three Runoffs titles to his name; Calvin was undoubtedly looking to notch one for himself.

Driving the No. 88 River City/Hoosier/Two Dogg Piper DF3D Honda, Kautz had qualified 0.181sec ahead of four-time FF National Champ Jonathan Kotyk.

When the green flew on Friday during the first of three Hagerty Race Days at the Runoffs, Kautz hammered down as the 13-car field rocketed toward Turn 1 of the 4.048-mile, 14-turn circuit.

For his part, Theodore Burns lit a fire at the start, jumping from third to first — but by Turn 5, Kotyk was up front, followed by Kautz in second. A turn later, Kautz had slotted himself into the lead. In fourth was Sebastian Mateo Naranjo — although Naranjo exchanged that position for second overall a few turns later.

The top six breakaway pack simply wouldn’t sit still. Lap after lap, the leaders spread the width of the track with every passing opportunity. That battle allowed Tazio Stefanelli to join Demetrios Constantinidis and William Ferguson at the tail end of the front pack. A few laps later, Nathan Down and Antonio Costantino made the frontrunners nine strong.

Keeping track of who held what position was more than impossible, with shuffling taking place turn after turn. Two cars might pull a half-second gap, but a few corners later, they were bunched once more.

Lap 10 brought the first significant contact for the front pack, as Naranjo and Kautz touched tires entering Turn 5. Kautz launched into the air, stopped, and then rejoined the pack, the contact removing him from the front pack.

Into the last lap, anyone in the top five stood a shot at the win.

The cars bobbed and weaved in their last time through Turn 5, with Kotyk holding strong at the front. Exiting the Kink, Burns and Kotyk made nose-to-tail contact, pushing Burns into the inside wall, leaving Kotyk with a small gap. Kotyk was the first to cross the stripe, but the real race was the pack that followed, as Stefanelli beat out Naranjo, with Down next under the checker. In all, 0.111sec covered the gap from Stefanelli to Down.

Following the race, Kotyk was penalized for a racing infraction, moving him from first to eighth on the grid, meaning Stefanelli had earned the win, with Naranjo claiming second, Down third, Constantino fourth, and Constantinidis fifth. Kautz, meanwhile, recovered for sixth.

This was Stefanelli’s first time at the Runoffs, leaving the 25-year-old Blackhawk Valley Region member ecstatic with his medal. “It was amazing,” he said after emerging from his No. 23 Millennium Forms Spectrum FF 1600 Honda. “[It was my] first time ever here at the Runoffs and I had the best race of my life. [It was] just clean racing, hard racing, but everyone was very fair.”

Also a Runoffs rookie, Central Illinois Region member Naranjo was just as pleased with the medal he earned driving his No. 80 Ares Elite Vision/MNR Mygale SJ14 Honda from seventh to second — a feat that earned him the Sunoco Hard Charger Award. “The race was chaotic and I really had so much fun,” said the 17-year-old. “From my point of view, we just had action-packed from start to finish like we do in the pro series, and to me, it was hard racing but fair racing, and this is what I love most about it.”

A little more seasoned in years, Down proved you didn’t need to be age 25 or under to perform well in FF during your Runoffs rookie appearance. Colorado Region’s Down ran a smart race, moving his No. 96 Downforce/Stay Fresh Cheese Bags Swift DB6 Honda from eighth on the grid to third.

The honor of being the first race of the 60th anniversary SCCA® National Championship Runoffs® presented by Sunoco went to B-Spec and its 25 competitors during the first of three Hagerty Race Days.

The field was led to the green flag early Friday morning by Tire Rack Pole Award winner Daniel Conway in No. 98 Brondon Foot & Ankle/Empire Pizza Mini Cooper, who established a new lap record for the class — around Road America’s 4.048-mile, 14-turn circuit — during qualifying in Wisconsin.

Starting alongside Conway for the 13-lap contest around America’s National Park of Speed was teammate and reigning B-Spec National Champion Richard Hromin in the No. 11 Mini USA/RaTSport/RP/Envirotex Mini Coupe. He slotted in behind Conway as soon as possible, and the entire field made it through Turn 1 without incident.

The opening laps saw a gaggle of cars form a group at the front. Conway, Hromin and Riley Salyer were the first three, then not far back were Rob Piekarczyk, Josh Schmidt in a Chevrolet Sonic, Stewart Black and Eric Yagel.

As the race progressed, Salyer looked intent on disrupting the team plans of Conway and Hromin. On lap four, Salyer and Hromin swapped the second spot over a few corners while similar jostling of positions was happening further down in the top ten.

Lap seven saw Salyer make a great run uphill into Turn 6, which positioned him perfectly to take the lead away from Conway at Turn 7. But into the Kink, Conway grabbed the top spot back.

Riley kept hounding Conway on the next lap. Behind them, Black had gotten by Hromin for third, and Joe McClughan — driving a Mazda 2 — was mixing it up with Yagel, Piekarczyk, Chris Taylor and Schmidt. Then at the exit of Turn 6 after an uphill run, Salyer went wide into the grass and dropped several positions.

The action kept going on lap nine with Conway and Hromin hooked together once again, but McClughan, Yagel, Black and Piekarczyk weren’t out of the hunt. Salyer had even managed to slot himself back into seventh place after his off-track excursion.

In Turn 5 on lap nine, it was Hromin’s turn to take the lead as Conway dropped way back. McClughan charged up to pass Hromin in Turn 7, but the reigning Champion from SCCA’s Washington D.C. Region took the spot back as the field shot through the Kink once again. In the meantime, Black had bided his time and ended up moving from third to first by the end of that lap.

Things got crazy heading down Road America’s 4,405-foot front stretch to start lap 10 as Black had his foot to the floor and moved into the grass at one point to avoid losing momentum. Hromin, Black, McClughan and Conway were trying to sort things out going into Turn 1 with laps dwindling. Then Conway and McClughan made contact, and Conway spun off track at the Turn 1 exit.

Conway’s car couldn’t continue, and a full-course yellow came out on the tenth lap. The race finished under yellow, with Hromin claiming his second-straight B-Spec Championship.

“It was just a fight,” Hromin said of the B-Spec battle. “I knew if we went back to green, I was dead. I really feel bad my teammate got taken out, but my emotions are flowing right now.”

Black claimed runner-up in the No. 40 Bill Black Chevrolet Sonic. That’s his first podium finish in five Runoffs starts.

“We had a great run going and we split three-wide, I think,” Black said of the excitement that occurred down the main straight during what ended up being the last racing lap. “Rich (Hromin) moved over on me a little bit, and I said, ‘I’m not lifting, man. I’m going and we’ll see what happens.’ I held my breath, closed one eye, and squeezed it through.

“What a race,” Black continued. “That was so much fun.”

Yagel, driving the No. 46 MSR Houston/Yagel Exchange Honda Fit, finished third for his first podium finish in his very first Runoffs race.

“Overall, this was a battle the whole race,” Yagel said. “We had an understanding that we would all hang back and chill and wait for the last couple laps for a shootout. And that’s pretty much what happened.”

Salyer managed a fourth-place finish in his Mazda 2, Piekarczyk was fifth in a Honda Fit, and Taylor sixth in another Mazda 2.

The Sunoco Hard Charger award went to Black, who started seventh and finished second.
