The Sports Car Club of America is shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Steve Harris, serving the Board of Directors as the Area 4 representative, on Thursday evening. Harris, of Dayton, Ohio, was a long-time steward, a Club Racing competitor, and Club member. He was 65.
From John Walsh, Chairman of the SCCA Board of Directors:
“I can safely speak for all of the Board when I say we are shocked, and saddened, today. This is a tremendous loss for the Board and the Club. Steve was the workhorse of our Board, and happily took on every challenge presented to him. His energy and enthusiasm. especially in his leadership with our subsidiaries – SCCA Enterprises and SCCA Pro Racing – will be missed, and our thoughts are with his family, friends and co-workers.”
Steve’s obituary from the Dayton Daily News is here.
“Just to be clear, every racer has a team,” states author Tom Martin in a recent Winding Road article titled Simple Steps To Managing Your Team Better. “The ‘team’ might be you. Period. It might be you and a friend, or you and anyone you can find to help at the track. Or, on the other end of the spectrum, it might be a full complement of mechanics and engineers on a professional arrive-and-drive team.”
So, since every racer has some sort of team, what’s the best way to get the most from teammates? Martin believes the root of proper team management rests in having clear goals. But what should those goals be and how does a team help achieve those goals?
For answers to such questions, check out the Top 10 list of the best uses for a team at Winding Road. The off season is a great time to ponder some of the philosophical aspects of motor racing, and the article just might get you thinking ahead, which could put you ahead when the racing season comes back around.
