SCCA’s Atlanta Region hosts the Hoosier Racing Tire SCCA® Super Tour (HST) March 6-8, 2026, at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta. Part of the Summit Racing Equipment SCCA Road Racing program, the next couple days hold some cache thanks to an announcement proclaiming the site as venue of the 2027-2028 Runoffs® National Championship.
From 1970 through 1993, Road Atlanta was where the Runoffs went down. Certain competitors etched their name in motorsports history during that time span, and SCCA Volunteers had a blast and can’t wait for the “Big Show” to come back.
Witness to the Runoffs party in the early ‘90s was Atlanta Region member Jeff Banker. He is F&C Chief at this weekend’s HST confab and simply said “wow” as far as the National Championship returning to Road Atlanta. He’s already fielding housing requests from other Volunteers interested in being part of the 2027 Runoffs party. That makes sense considering the level of access Volunteers have to everything the Runoffs has to offer.
“You’re right there next to the cars and right next to the action with the smells and sounds,” Banker said. “Every one of those Volunteers becomes a member of your family. The camaraderie is unbelievable.”
Sharon Rollow, an Atlanta Region Registrar helping with this weekend’s HST event, also saw Runoffs action for many years. She, too, is experiencing much the same as Banker as far as Volunteers from far and wide already looking for a place to stay in Georgia when the National Championship rolls around next year.
“I live 20 minutes from the track, and I’ve already got friends trying to make reservations at my house for the Runoffs to stay with me that week,” Rollow joked. “There was just a feeling of excitement when the Runoffs were at Road Atlanta. It was electric with electricity in the air.”
The Road Atlanta Runoffs excitement trickles down, or up, through generations. Jason Hartman, another Atlanta Region member, is an excellent example. His dad, Larry, worked corners for years at Road Atlanta during the Runoffs. Jason is carrying on the tradition and doing the same during this weekend’s HST party, with his dad on site as well.
“My dad worked the first Runoffs at Road Atlanta,” Jason said. “One of the things he got excited about when I got old enough was us being able to flag the Runoffs together.
“We didn’t get an opportunity to do that,” Jason continued. “But as soon as I saw that the Runoffs was coming back to Road Atlanta, he was the first person I texted. We are now both excited to have the opportunity to go back and flag the Runoffs together.”
Be it making long-held dreams a reality or getting the gang back together for another party, Atlanta Region can’t wait for the 2027 Runoffs. Until then, they’re thrilled to deliver excellence during this weekend’s HST event.
