SCCA National Championship Runoffs to Return to Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta in 2027

The Sports Car Club of America™ National Championship Runoffs® – the pinnacle of amateur road racing in the United States – will be hosted at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta in Braselton, GA, for the 2027 and 2028 seasons. This decision marks an exciting new chapter for one of motorsport’s most iconic events, returning the winner-take-all SCCA® Runoffs to a racing circuit it once called home for nearly two and a half decades.

“It’s really a thrill for the Runoffs to return to Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, where so much of the Club’s history was written,” said SCCA’s Vice President of Road Racing Eric Prill. “While I grew up an ‘SCCA kid,’ I never had the opportunity to attend the Runoffs in Atlanta. But it was that era that sparked the interest for me, and an entire generation of racers, to dream of racing at the Runoffs.

“While SCCA has continued to race at Road Atlanta through the years, this will very much be a homecoming for the Club, as the last time the Runoffs was hosted there was 1993. To put that into perspective, when the Runoffs was last at Road Atlanta, the Turn 10a and 10b complex didn’t exist, and 20% of our licensed drivers weren’t even born.”

Since its inception in 1964, the SCCA Runoffs has stood as the defining moment for SCCA road racers across the country, and in many cases, the world. Each year, top competitors within the Summit Racing Equipment SCCA Road Racing series earn the right to compete at the Runoffs, racing for the coveted title of National Champion.

The Runoffs represents not only intense, competitive racing but also the camaraderie, passion, and spirit that defines amateur road racing in America.

During its original tenure at Road Atlanta, the Runoffs was hosted annually at the circuit from 1970 through 1993 – and legends were made. For example, Joe Huffaker won his first of what would eventually become 10 SCCA National Championship titles, Randy Canfield won four of his five Runoffs gold medals, Skip Barber claimed his second and third Runoffs wins, racer (and actor) Paul Newman landed on the top step of the podium four times, Steve Sargis won two of his 10 titles there, John Heinricy earned his first Runoffs win of what would ultimately become 16, and Jerry Hansen claimed his final 24 (of 27 total) National Championship titles at Road Atlanta.

That’s only a few of the racers who won the Runoffs during those 24 years. Add in the likes of other Road Atlanta Runoffs winners like Scott Sharp, Duane Davis, Michael Lewis, Dave Weitzenhof, Bill Noble, Elliott Forbes-Robinson, Andy Porterfield, John Morton, Bob Sharp, Bobby Rahal, Mike Davies, Bob Lazier, Borris Said, Don Knowles, David Daughtery, Michael Galati, and Randy Pobst, and it’s undeniable that Road Atlanta played a key role in America’s motorsports history.

“Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta’s history is deeply intertwined with the SCCA Runoffs, so we’re proud to bring the event back here for 2027 and 2028,” said Rick Humphrey, President and General Manager of Michelin Raceway. “This championship event has made such a meaningful impact on so many racers and fans alike for so many years, and the decades at Michelin Raceway were some of the most legendary. We’re thrilled to be a part of this new era of Runoffs history as the event returns to its former home here at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta.”

The 2027 Runoffs at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta is scheduled for Oct. 17-23.

But First: 2026 Runoffs at Road America

The 2026 SCCA National Championship Runoffs Presented by Sunoco takes place Sept. 28-Oct. 4, at Road America. Known as the National Park of Speed, the 4.048-mile, 14-turn circuit nestled in Wisconsin’s Kettle Moraine near Elkhart Lake has hosted the Runoffs from 2009-’13, in 2020, and from 2024-’26.

“Road America offers a compelling blend of high-speed straights, flowing technical corners, and dramatic elevation changes that challenge drivers and delight spectators,” said Prill. “It’s been an honor to be able to host the Runoffs at Road America so many times through the years, and we can’t wait to see the amazing on-track battles once more this October.”
