When it comes to the Sept. 24-Oct. 2, 2022, SCCA National Championship Runoffs at VIRginia International Raceway, there’s more to the race than taking the green flag. There’s vehicle prep (we’re a few weeks out – I should probably install that new motor), transportation logistics (why aren’t my trailer lights working?), accommodations (do I really want to sleep in my pickup for a week?), and more. One of those sometimes-overlooked prep items is signing up for the more than two dozen free contingency programs that can win you cash and prizes at the Runoffs.
Did we say two dozen? More like two baker’s dozen, with one to spare – that’s 27 contingency programs that can put money or product in your pocket should you meet certain criteria. What criteria? A podium finish is good, but totally unnecessary. Case in point, Hawk Performance awards product certificates as far back as 10th, Sunoco features the Hard Charger Award for the racer picking up the most positions during each race, and Summit Racing Equipment gives $50 to the competitor who turns the least number of laps per class.
Beyond Hawk Performance, Sunoco, and Summit Racing Equipment, other companies offering Runoffs contingency programs include Tire Rack, Bell Helmets, Carbotech Performance Brakes, Eibach Springs, Ford Performance, Goodyear Tire, Hyperco, PAGID Racing, Pegasus Auto Racing Supplies, Penske Racing Shocks, Pirelli Tire, SCCA Enterprises, SPA Technique, Tilton, Trans Am, Toyota Racing Development, Function + Form, G-LOC Brakes, Hankook Performance Tires, Hoosier Racing Tire, Mazda Motorsports, Nissan Motorsports, Trivinci Race-Keeper/Road-Keeper, and Speed Sport Engineering.
Best of all, registration is completely free and can be completed online with the click of a button or – in case you forget to do that – on site in the Runoffs tech shed at VIR.
If you registered for contingency programs through the SCCA for the regular Summit Racing Equipment SCCA Road Racing competition season, the Runoffs contingency registration process is very similar – and remember that Runoffs contingency programs require separate registration from the regular season. Runoffs contingency registration must be completed before the big race (or qualifying, in the case of Tire Rack’s Pole Award), and not all programs are administered through the SCCA, so pay close attention to the instructions on the contingency program forms.
