One year ago (nearly to the day), the Tire Rack SCCA® Time Attack Challenge headed to Carolina Motorsports Park (CMP) in Kershaw, SC, with the post-event recap headline reading “The Action Was Hot, Hot, Hot…” Twelve months later, and we could have run the same headline for the June 13-14, 2026, Time Attack Challenge at CMP, because the temps were once again through the roof, with on-track action to match.
“Hot as hell,” was one report when asked how the weekend went, although that could have referred to several things. The mercury peaked around 95 degrees F, with the coolest air being in the low 70s come nightfall. Still, a slight breeze all weekend kept energy up, setting the scene for drivers to log quick times on Saturday and Sunday, both of which would add together to create overall scores.
For the Record
While those conditions aren’t necessarily ideal for maximum speed, three Tire Rack SCCA Time Attack Challenge drivers didn’t care, laying down times good enough to set new track records.
Club Spec MX-5’s track record was set during the weekend by Jessica Mignone, at a time of 1:58.865. If the name sounds familiar, it’s because she set another Time Attack Challenge track record in early June, also in Club Spec MX-5, but that time it was on the left side of the country at Thunderhill Raceway Park.
Billy Boone also set a new track record at CMP in a Mazda, but his came in Sport 5 driving an ND Miata with a time of 1:50.604 – that’s a three second improvement over his time from last year, which was also his Time Attack Challenge debut.
Finally, there’s David Albrecht, who set a new high bar for the Sport 3 class in his 2021 Honda Civic. Albrecht is no stranger to Time Attack Challenge competition or running fast in the class. His 1:45.588 set a new lap record for the class as well as reset his personal best in the class by 2.6sec.
On Top
Mignone, Boone, and Albrecht all won their respective classes, but that doesn’t mean the action in the other classes wasn’t also on fire.
Max 1 saw six drivers setting down impressive times, with Nicklaus Bauer and his 2012 Chevrolet Corvette in hot pursuit of Jason Witt’s 2015 BMW M4 all weekend. Fastest time to fastest time, the margin was a scant 0.843sec, but that margin held for both days, putting Witt up front by 1.739sec.
Back to Boone, he set the Sport 5 record and won the class, but that doesn’t mean it came easily. On his 2022 MX-5’s heels all weekend was Garrett Snyder in a 1997 BMW Z3. By the final checkered flag, Boone’s overall margin of victory was just 1.658sec.
In Max 4, it was a rear-drive vs. all-drive battle up front, with Timothy Bart setting the fastest lap of the class with a 1:48.303 in a 2019 Subaru WRX. Steven Mortenson’s fastest time in his 2010 Porsche 911 was just 0.22sec shy of that, but consistency proved key over the weekend, with Mortenson eking out a 1.335sec margin of victory over Bart once Saturday and Sunday times were added together.
The closest battle of the weekend came in Tuner 3, where Derek Secord’s fastest time in his 2007 Honda S2000 was less than 0.6sec quicker than Ryan Woodyer’s 2013 VW Golf. Secord was only able to move the needle a little further in his favor over the course of two days, with his cumulative time win over Woodyer coming to the tune of just 0.872sec.
This wasn’t the only action that took place during the June 13-14 weekend. The rest can be found in the results.
Superlative Awards
No Tire Rack SCCA Time Attack Challenge weekend is complete without Superlative Awards. This weekend saw three earning recognitions that celebrate more than a win.
Most Improved was presented to Zachary Zennario. While he was the only entrant in Sport 4, he didn’t take it easy. His early Saturday times were respectable for someone learning the track, as this was his first Time Attack Challenge event at CMP, but he kept his eye on the prize, dipping into the 59s by weekend’s end, marking a 6.01sec improvement.
Top Novice went to Tyler Brown, who not only jumped into Time Attack Challenge competition headfirst in Max 1 driving a 2005 Lotus Elise, but he also found himself in quite the fight for third, with Brown barely losing the spot to Luke Lubenski by 1.253sec once Saturday and Sunday times were combined.
The Spirit of Time Trials award was presented to Lisa Keys. The award is presented to someone at an event who embodies what Time Trials is all about. From enthusiasm, inclusivity, accessibility, and fun, Keys is the true embodiment of this award.
Next Up
Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, PA, plays host to the next round of the Tire Rack SCCA Time Attack Challenge, with that adventure set to take place July 18-19, 2026. After that, the series is off to Autobahn Country Club in Joliet, IL, for the first weekend of August, with the show then traveling west for the Aug. 22-23 weekend at Ridge Motorsports Park in Shelton, WA.
That, of course, leads to the Oct. 23-25, 2026, Tire Rack SCCA Time Attack National Championship at Eagles Canyon Raceway in Decatur, TX. This is the inaugural National Championship event for SCCA Time Attack competition – you won’t want to miss it.
Believe it or not, that doesn’t conclude 2026 for the Time Attack Challenge. Nov. 14-15 sees the final Challenge event of the season, as it heads to Southern California and Buttonwillow Raceway Park.
