SCCA Relaunches Nationwide RaceTruck Challenge

The Sports Car Club of America™ is thrilled to announce the relaunch of a six-race series set to tour the United States, where professional racers and amateurs will compete side-by-side for substantial cash prizes starting in 2027. The SCCA® RaceTruck Challenge will build off the success of the prior RaceTruck Challenge series that toured America in the late 1980s and early 1990s, which boasted such drivers as Peter Cunningham, the Archer brothers, Steve Saleen, and more.

“After years of planning, it’s thrilling to finally see this project come to fruition,” said SCCA’s Vice President of Road Racing Eric Prill. “The RaceTruck series turned heads in the ’80s and ’90s, and with the popularity of smaller trucks once again on the rise, we know this is the right time to relaunch the series.”

The SCCA RaceTruck Challenge will welcome both amateur and professional racers in two truck categories that will compete in multi-class racing, with the series set to hit circuits most racers would never have the opportunity to compete at, including street circuits.

The RaceTrucks

The SCCA RaceTruck Challenge will feature “Over” and “Under” classes, with pickups like the Ford Ranger, Toyota Tacoma, Chevrolet Colorado, and Nissan Frontier in the “Over” class, and smaller pickups like the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz racing in the “Under” class.

SCCA RaceTruck Challenge rules will feature an alternate sequential transmission option with a small weight penalty.

Furthermore, RaceTruck Challenge vehicles will be added to the SCCA Road Racing GCR spec lines for Super Touring Under, allowing drivers to compete both in the RaceTruck Challenge and SCCA Road Racing weekends.

As for the race weekends, all races will feature classic Le Mans-style starts with drivers sprinting across pit lane to get to their RaceTrucks. Additionally, the series manager will have the freedom to invert the qualifying field at select events should certain criteria be met.

Club Spec Pickup

A third RaceTruck class will also see competition, but these will compete in a TrackSprint format during select weekends utilizing the soon-to-be announced Club Spec Pickup ruleset.

“Club Spec Pickup, or CSU, is the latest offering in SCCA’s Club Spec lineup and will be built from the XL model front-wheel-drive Ford Maverick,” said SCCA Vice President of Rally/Solo and Experiential Programs Heyward Wagner. “These pickups are readily available brand new and on the used-car market, making them the perfect option for all.”

The CSU rules are expected to include spec coilovers, swaybars, intake, and exhaust, with ECU tunes optional.

The Schedule

While the schedule is still being finalized, know that the 2027 SCCA RaceTruck Challenge calendar will include can’t-miss weekends running alongside some of the best professional racing series in the country with street circuits in California, Florida, Michigan, and Nevada.

Club Spec Pickup TrackSprints will join the SCCA RaceTruck Challenge at three street circuit events.
