Each year, SCCA®’s Middle Georgia Region hosts a charity event to partner with the local community, so on Nov. 16, the small-but-mighty Region held its annual charity autocross, this year in support of the Halo Group in Perry, GA.
The Halo Group provides services, training, and social events for adults with special needs.
The charity autocross event began with four qualifying runs for each of the 27 drivers. During the lunch break, a blind draw was made to populate a double elimination bracket for a head-to-head dual-cross in the afternoon.
The dual-cross, or Aussie Pursuit (as some may know it), places two cars on the same autocross course at the same time starting from opposite sides of the course – the winner is decided by observers rather than time.
With a best two out of three format for the head-to-head runs and the double elimination tournament, more than 200 runs were completed in the afternoon.
At the end of the day, it came down to David Nolan from Atlanta in his new Porsche Cayman, and Middle Georgia’s Garrett Culpepper in his street modified BRZ. It took all three runs, but in the end, Garrett took the win.
“The real winner for the day, though, was the Halo Group, as the event raised $700 for them,” said Middle Georgia Region’s RE Ray Brake.
In addition, a couple of the folks from the Halo Group came out to watch and got some rides around the course during the lunch break.
This isn’t the first charity donation Middle Georgia Region has made this year. The Region also donated $500 to the Peach County Animal Shelter that was just being established for the county.
