Hammann Earns First T3 Runoffs Title on Home Turf

Road America, site of the 62nd SCCA® National Championship Runoffs® Presented by Sunoco, sits in Wisconsin between the quaint towns of Elkhart Lake and Plymouth. Nic Hammann, from SCCA’s Kansas City Region, actually calls Elkhart Lake home. On Saturday afternoon during the first of two Hagerty Race Days taking place Oct. 4-5, 2025, at America’s National Park of Speed, Hammann tested the theory of a “home field advantage” in auto racing.

Hammann was the Touring 3 (T3) Tire Rack Pole Award winner heading into the day’s race. Beside him was Marshall Mast, the 2024 T3 National Champion who also claimed his victory at Road America. So, an epic battle was expected.

At the start, Hammann and his No. 41 Carbotech/Nissan/Paragon Brakes Nissan 370Z Nismo maneuvered for the lead over Mast. That opening lap also saw Juan Carlos Leroux Gonzalez find third, Scotty B White fourth, James Leithauser fifth, Gamaliel Aguilar-Gamez sixth, and Chris Hart in seventh.

Hammann and Mast set off and created a significant gap back to the rest of the field. However, Mast was never more than a half-second off Hammann’s bumper. Behind them, plenty of action unfolded around the 4.048-mile, 14-turn circuit.

On lap four, Hart moved up to fifth while Aguilar-Gamez and Leithauser worked to decide the sixth and seventh spots. Shortly after, White had tire trouble at Canada Corner and slowed on his way to the pits, shifting everyone else up one position.

At the midway point, Hammann and Mast were locked in a tactical battle way out in front. Gonzalez was all alone in third, 14 seconds behind the leaders and far ahead of those chasing him — Hart, Leithauser and Aguilar-Gamez.

The battle up front heated up as the field began lap 10. Mast pressured Hammann, searching for a way past the local driver. Moments later, Gonzalez pulled his car off course with a problem, and SCCA Stewards deemed it in an unsafe position, bringing out a full-course yellow that bunched up the field.

Unfortunately, the race never resumed, and the checkered flag waved on lap 11. That sealed Hammann’s first National Championship in only his second Runoffs appearance and earned him a spot atop the victory podium with a bottle from Mazza Wines, the Official Sparkling Wine supplier to SCCA.

“That was pretty incredible,” Hammann said of the afternoon race. “Marshall is an incredible driver. To be the best, you’ve got to beat the best.”

Mast, leaning against his No. 31 Phoenix Performance/Hawk/Hoosier Ford Mustang V6 in pitlane after the race, seemed very calm and collected about his second silver medal and ninth visit to a Runoffs victory podium.

“You can’t be super mad about that race. I mean, we just drove the wheels off those things for 11 laps,” Mast said. “When the caution flew, I had my best run on him coming out of Turn 14. I’m bummed, but hopefully we put on a good show for the fans.”

Hart hung tight to bring home third in the No. 5 FabTek/Ridge Motorsports Park Nissan 370Z Nismo. That’s his third bronze medal in five Runoffs appearances.

“My car was off all week, and we struggled,” Hart noted. “I mean, I’m happy we ended up where we did.”

Leithauser finished fourth, Aguilar-Gamez fifth, and John LoGiudice sixth after an incident early-race incident. The Sunoco Hard Charger award went to Roger Eagleton — Friday’s Hawk Brake Through performer in the class — for climbing from 12th to seventh.

The 62nd SCCA® National Championship Runoffs® Presented by Sunoco is the pinnacle of American amateur motorsports and crowns Sports Car Club of America™ Champions as part of the Summit Racing Equipment SCCA Road Racing program. In 2025, two Hagerty Race Days at Wisconsin’s Road America decide 23 gold-medal winners.
