Hagerty: What to Use to Clean up Oil Spills and Leaks

Each month we highlight content produced by SCCA®’s official insurance partner, Hagerty – yes, Hagerty creates fantastic automotive articles and videos as well as offering its bread-and-butter specialty vehicle insurance and a variety of other insurance coverage for things like Track Night in America events plus roadside assistance, vehicle transport, and more.

If you’re into #funwithcars as much as we are, you’ve undoubtedly needed to use an absorbent at some point to clean up freshly (er) “liberated” oil or antifreeze that found its way to your garage floor. Perhaps for the hundredth time. For that, Hagerty’s Kyle Smith recently stumbled upon a YouTube video where Project Farm creator Todd Osgood tested a variety of products that can be used to clean up oil and antifreeze spills.

“The test was simple: Weigh out an amount of absorbent, then saturate it with oil or coolant and weigh again to see how much oil was absorbed,” Smith wrote. “This was also compared to each absorbent’s price to get a ballpark of both effectiveness and value. In the end, there were clear front runners for both absorbent mats and granulated. For a put-down-and-sweep-up option, these tests favored Coco Cleaner Pro, which is made from coconut fibers. Meanwhile, Pig brand mats fared the best out of the mat tests.”

That’s not to say run-of-the-mill kitty litter was not useful – but this test certainly illustrates what you’re getting for your money.

Pro tip: The Project Farm video is about 19 minutes long, so while you’ll definitely want to watch the first few minutes to get the gist of the test, you’ll ultimately want to skip to the 18:25 mark for the summary. Why skip forward? Because if you’re like us, you currently have oil on the floor of your garage that needs to be taken care of right now.
