Hoosier Super Tour Road Atlanta: Saturday Notebook

Though cool, the sunshine crept through the Georgia clouds on Saturday for the Hoosier Racing Tire SCCA Super Tour races at Road Atlanta. Saturday featured eight group races, each 25 minutes in length around the 2.54-mile circuit just north of the city.

Travel Fast, Travel Far: As mentioned on Friday on SCCA.com, a crew from Seattle – led by Scotty B. White and his Knight Transportation company – are at Road Atlanta this weekend to compete at the Super Tour and on some bucket list tracks. And since they are here, they figured they might as well win.

White opened the day with a Touring 2 and overall Group 1 win, and Michael McAleenan followed it up with a Touring 1 win. It was everything they hoped for.

“I’ve got to thank Scotty, who gets us to all of these bucket list tracks that we maybe haven’t driven on,” McAleenan said. “It’s a fantastic opportunity to do that, especially when the weather is crap in Seattle right now, it’s a nice winter vacation. I get to go home now and watch the Sebring 12 hours, and watch Petit Le Mans later in the year, and know that the track is so different than it looks on tv.”

Over, Under and Through: Charles Mactutus did everything he could on Saturday to best Danny Steyn in Spec Miata, and still fell just short – by 0.109-second, as it turned out.

Mactutus followed his OPM teammate down the long Road Atlanta back straight for the final time, and when Steyn defended to the inside left in the braking zone to the hard left-hander, swung around the outside and got his nose to the lead of the race.

As he started to turn back to the right to go under the bridge, the veteran Steyn tapped the brakes and turned harder, putting himself back to the inside for the run down the hill. As they crept through the final turn side by side, Steyn’s inside path had more momentum and kept his bumper in front by the slimmest of margins.

Setting the Bar With Wins: Mason Workman has become an F Production contender at every event he attends, including the Runoffs. On Saturday at Road Atlanta, he had to earn his victory thanks to the pressure from Matt Reppert.

Workman started on pole, but neither he nor Reppert could separate themselves from the other. Reppert snuck into the lead at the stripe on laps five through seven of the 16 lap race, but the pair came to the white flag nose to tail.

Pushing hard, Reppert chased Workman as they worked through a busy track full of traffic. The ebbs and flows evened out through the final corners, and Workman crossed the stripe with a win by three tenths of a second.

Spring Forward: With daylight savings time beginning this weekend, Sunday’s action gets here an hour sooner. Racing begins at 8:05 a.m. ET, with eight group races. All the action can be seen live on SCCA.com, the club’s YouTube page, and on the SCCA Official Facebook page with Brian Bielanski and Gregg Ginsberg on the call.
