Rules For Selling Your Car on SCCA.com

We try not to make a habit of posting “cars for sale” stories here. This isn’t a classified page, and there are several other, and better, places to sell race cars. But once in a while, one seems worthy.

But then, SCCA is a Club of rules. So, if we’re going to make any exceptions, we better outline that clearly.

Four or more Runoffs victories? That would be great for Andrew Aquilante, Michael Varacins, Joe Huffaker, and more… but that seems too low of a bar.

How about four or more Runoffs victories, plus multiple Trans Am wins? That cuts the list down too, but then there are a few – Lawrence Loshak, among others, who still might take advantage of the list.

Ok, ok – Four or more SCCA National Championships; Trans-Am and other professional wins; and starts in the 24 Hours At Daytona and the 24 Hours of Le Mans? Oops, that Mike Lewis guy is on the line. That won’t work.

So, we’ve got it. If you have a car that was driven at the Runoffs by a four-or-more time SCCA National Champion, who won races in Trans-Am, finished on the podium at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and won a class at the 24 Hours At Daytona… AND won an Oscar for Best Actor? You may list said car on SCCA.com for sale.

With that in mind, consider this a listing of the 1979 C Production National Championship-winning Datsun 280ZX for sale on MotorCarClassics.com. This car was piloted by one Paul Newman (see, it fits the rules!) to six regular season wins that year, plus the Runoffs gold medal at Road Atlanta.

This car was spectacular when it was new; it’s equally so now. It even comes with the SCCA logbook! That means technically, with a little work, maybe you could find some place to race it at Indy in 2021 (editor’s note: please, for the love of whatever you believe in, don’t do that).

So what’s the catch? No offense to the guys already listed in this article, but this one is probably going to sell for well beyond most of our price ranges – so consider that when you click the “Make An Offer” button prominently displayed on the page.

Look, we’re not going to rat you out if you purchase this thing. In fact, we’ll do you one better. If you need something to tell your spouse about your new race car purchase but don’t want to lie: tell them your new race car cost less than a watch.
