Solo National Championships Conclude With 37 New Champs

LINCOLN, Neb. (Sept. 2, 2011) €“ The 39th annual Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships concluded on Friday with the crowning of 37 class National Champions at the Lincoln Airpark. Nine drivers earned their title with come from behind wins on Friday after trailing during Thursday€™s first round of competition. Brianne Corn, of San Marcos, Texas, became the just the third woman €“ and first since Rita Wilsey in 2005 €“ in SCCA Solo history to win a Solo National Championship in an open class. Corn led B Modified in the Janco/Hoosier LeGrand Dragon after the first day, and then turned the quickest lap of the day on Friday. Clemens Burger, who had captured the previous two National Championships in class, gave chase but ultimately fell 1.504-second short of topping Corn. The National Championship is the second for Corn, who won the B Modified Ladies class in 2008. Corn finished second to Burger a season ago in her third season in the open class. Shauna Marinus was the first woman to win an open class National Championship, in 1998. The Street Touring® R class featured 64 cars, the third-largest field in the history of the Solo National Championship. Comprised mainly of Honda S2000 and Mazda MX-5 machines, the class was expected to be one of the most competitive coming into the weekend. The drivers did not disappoint. On his final run and with only one more class car yet to go, Robert Thorne, of Littleton, Colo., turned his fastest time of the day in the SCR Performance Honda S2000. That time gave Thorne the lead and his first National Championship by just 0.002-second over day one leader Nicholas Barbato, tying the closest margin of victory for a National Championship open class in the long history of the event. In fact, only 0.159-second separated first place from fifth place in the final tally. Barbato, of Wethersfield, Conn., was second in his Thanks Mark/For Liam Honda S2000, followed by James Yom (Hardrace/VelocityShop.com Honda S2000), Matthew Glagola (Honda S2000) and Max Hayter (Gearheads Garage/AST/Chasecam Mazda MX-5). Ron Williams, of Topeka, Kan., nearly overcame one of the biggest hard-luck stories of the event to earn his third title, but saw the F Street Prepared title go to Kevin Wenzel, of Longmont, Colo. Williams turned the second-fastest run of the day in his first run on Thursday before the motor in his car blew and ended its week. Williams was offered a ride in the Volkswagen Scirocco being driven by Randy Hickman, and completed his Thursday runs. That car, however, was experiencing mechanical troubles of its own, leaving Williams searching for a car for Friday. Despite being his closest competition for the National Championship, Wenzel offered Williams the co-drive in his Thrudvang Racing/BMW2002.com BMW 2002. Getting comfortable with the car, Williams took the lead from Wenzel on his final run of the week. Wenzel saved the best for last, speeding through his run and earning his first National Championship over Williams by 0.633-second. Wenzel recalled Williams offering him a ride at the Spring Nationals in Lincoln after Wenzel€™s car had trouble, and was happy to reciprocate. Lisa Garfield, of Mount Airy, Md., captured her first National Championship in dramatic fashion. Garfield trailed perennial Champion Suzanne Segal, of Las Vegas, Nev., in Formula 125 Ladies by just 0.039-second entering the final day of competition. Garfield led early in her CTS CR125 shifter kart, but on her final run, her right side-pod fall off the kart on course, representing critical weight she would need when crossing the scales. She tipped those scales just three pounds above minimum weight, securing the title over Segal by 0.931-second. In F Street Prepared Ladies, all three trophy positions changed throughout Friday€™s runs on the East course, with the Championship and each trophy spot determined on the last three runs of the class. Kathy Wolfskill, of Nederland, Colo., trailed co-driver Jamie Yost, of Windsor, Colo., entering the day, but led Andrea Feay, of Charlotte, N.C., and Yost after the first two of three Friday runs. On Yost€™s final run in the www.bmw2002.com BMW 2002, she jumped to the top with the quickest time of the day. Wolfskill went next and dropped 0.8-second off Yost€™s time and jumped to the top. Ginette Jordan went next and ran just a tick off Wolfkill€™s time to jump to third in her Hoosier Honda Civic, only to be edged by 0.018-second by Feay on the final run for the class to take the final spot on the trophy stage. Wolfskill officially won by 0.322-second. Donald Elzinga, of Waterford, Mich., jumped from fourth place after first day runs to win C Modified in his Reynard FF1600 by 0.231-second over first-day leader Nick Myers, of Danville, Ind. Elzinga is a first-time National Champion after three runner-up finishes. At the conclusion of competition, H Stock National Champion James Feinberg topped nine other topped nine other Champions from Friday win the Gumout All Star Challenge and a $500 cash prize.A total of 1,103 competitors participated in the four-day event that crowned 68 National Champions and saw winners in six additional supplemental classes.
