BLYTHEVILLE, Ark. (June 13, 2012) – The Arkansas Aeroplex in Blytheville may not be a Summer Vacation destination, except for those that are a part of the Tire Rack SCCA ProSolo Series. Those drivers visiting Blytheville can annually expect the red carpet treatment, complete with visits from the Mayor, complimentary cookouts by the local fire department, and long, fast courses on the concrete of the airport. This year, Andy Hollis, of Austin, Texas, outlasted the field to take the Gumout Super Challenge.
Hollis, a multi-time Gumout Super Challenge winner in his career, conquered the event after qualifying first in the Street Touring FWD class behind the wheel of the GRM/AST/PowerCurve Dyno/FTW MAZDA2 and then topping five consecutive challengers in the elimination rounds.
Many of the 154 total competitors at the Blytheville ProSolo on Friday and Saturday remained through Monday for the Tire Rack Solo National Tour, as the two events combined for the first annual Summer Nationals modeled after a similar doubleheader in Lincoln, Neb., over Memorial Day weekend.
The run through the bracket to victory for Hollis began with wins over Craig Wilcox’ D Stock QuickSilver/SoloRacer/BFGoodrich Tires Mini Cooper and Josh Luster’s Street Touring Ultra top qualifying AgileAuto.com/COBB Tuning Subaru STI in the opening two rounds. Hollis then topped the B Stock Crown Honda Charlotte/Team CMM Honda S2000 of Jadrice Toussaint to move into the Final Four for the weekend.
Tom O’Gorman was the fastest Street Touring Sport driver in his Full Throttle Indoor Karting Honda CRX Si, but fell to Hollis in the semi-final.
David Hedderick’s win behind the wheel of the Dave’s Miata & Mini Works Mini Cooper over Mike Kline’s Kart Modified class Little Chopstix 12oz Racing CRG Honda Road Rebel machine set up a rematch of the top two qualifiers in the Street Touring FWD class.
Hollis, just like in the qualifying round, got the best of Hedderick to take the title. O’Gorman topped Kline in the consolation match to win the bronze medal.
Kim Whitener, from Fort Worth, Texas, took the Ladies Challenge in her top-qualifying Motion Control Suspension Honda CRX, topping Gwen Baake (Mini Cooper) in the final. Tara Johns finished third in the Prudential/Tweakit/ABC Plumbing Mazda Miata.
The Tire Rack ProSolo Series makes its next stop in the Northwest, visiting Hampton Mills (Washington) for the Packwood ProSolo, July 7-8.
