April is a hopping month for so many reasons – the obvious one being the caliber of people who joined the Sports Car Club of America® in April and hit a milestone anniversary this month (that being 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, and 70 years with the SCCA). Even with a cursory look at the listing below you will find numerous members who joined the SCCA® in April and went on to run at the top of their field. 

We’ll begin with taking that statement quite literally to point out a couple of National Champions in our midst. For that, April 1986 was the year and month to join the SCCA, as Chicago Region member Chris Bovis is a four-time SCCA National Championship Runoffs® winner, with New England Region member Steven Introne having a Runoffs title to his name.

On to top runners who have helped build the Club into what it is today, there’s Central Florida Region’s Howard Duncan, who joined the Club in April 1981 and was inducted into the SCCA Hall of Fame in 2022. That’s not the only recognition he’s received through the years, as he was presented with the Woolf Barnato Award in 2014, the Johnson Spirit of the Sport award in 2005, and the Solo Cup in 1993. His wife Linda joined the Club the same time as Howard, and she is a Club leader in her own right, most recently taking on the role of SCCA’s National Coordinator for Tire Rack Street Survival schools.

Achieving the 50-year membership mark this month, there is another SCCA power couple in Fort Wayne Region’s Raleigh and Velma Boreen. Raleigh earned the Woolf Barnato Award in 2012, with both claiming the Solo Cup in 2008. The two were inducted into the SCCA Hall of Fame together in 2024.

Then there are the leaders of the longevity pack, which this month goes to Peter Edward Schwartzott, the Western New York Region member who joined the Club in April 1961, making him a 65-year member; and Arizona Region’s Robert Hugill, who became an SCCA member five years before Schwartzott in April 1956.
