Insurance coverage for motorsports participation can sometimes feel confusing. What’s covered, what isn’t, and how it applies during an event are questions many drivers don’t think about – until they need the answers.
For SCCA® members, protection typically comes from two places: (1) SCCA provides event-related excess medical coverage, which helps protect you and others involved in an event, and (2) vehicle coverage is available through Hagerty, designed for those who want protection for their cars while participating in autocross or high-performance driving events.
Together, these protections address two needs – coverage for people and coverage for vehicles. Understanding this distinction can help determine what level of protection is right for you.
Quick Take:
- SCCA insurance protects you and other event participants
- It does not cover damage to your vehicle
- Optional vehicle coverage is available through Hagerty
SCCA Protects You
You may not realize it, but SCCA membership includes participant accident insurance coverage when attending SCCA-sanctioned events – among the strongest coverage available in grassroots motorsports. That protection is part of the reason SCCA events are widely recognized as providing some of the most comprehensive coverage in amateur motorsports.
SCCA’s participant accident insurance is designed to protect you as an SCCA member – but it does not provide coverage for damage to your vehicle.
SCCA’s coverage is focused on protecting you and other event participants. The policy provides up to $1,000,000 in medical expense reimbursement, accidental death and dismemberment benefits as well as emergency medical evacuation coverage, and limited loss-of-income protection, along with additional supporting benefits.
SCCA’s event insurance also provides coverage for track facility damage that may occur during an event. If a barrier or other facility infrastructure is damaged as a result of an incident, the associated costs are handled through the event’s insurance policy rather than billed directly to the driver.
Hagerty Protects Your Car
If you want protection for your vehicle while participating in these activities, SCCA’s Official Insurance Partner Hagerty offers several optional coverage endorsements that can be added to an existing Hagerty car insurance policy. Hagerty offers a quick summary sheet of these endorsements (which you can download here).
These endorsements are designed specifically for activities like autocross and high-performance driving events (HPDE). They do not apply to wheel-to-wheel racing competition.
You can choose one endorsement or combine multiple options depending on the motorsports events you participate in. Note that the endorsements are tied to the underlying auto policy, meaning the owner of the insured vehicle can allow others to drive their car.
Motorsports Advantage Endorsement (MAE)
This is the starting point for Hagerty’s motorsports coverage. It is an entry-level endorsement that can be added to an existing Hagerty policy for just $20 per year and provides baseline protections while attending motorsports events.
Coverage includes:
- Track damage coverage up to $1,000
- Debris removal coverage up to $2,500
- Pit vehicle physical damage coverage up to $5,000, subject to a deductible
- Safety equipment coverage
- Limited coverage for tools, spare parts, and trip interruption
The MAE also serves as the foundation for the additional coverage options described below.
Autocross Endorsement
If you regularly participate in autocross, this one’s for you.
This endorsement provides physical damage coverage for your vehicle while participating in autocross events, with coverage up to the insured value of the vehicle. And, coverage follows the vehicle, so you can allow another driver to drive the car while still maintaining coverage under the policy. In a sport where co-driving is common, that flexibility can be a big advantage.
The cost is $250 per vehicle per year, plus $1 for every $100 of vehicle value above $25,000.
Additional benefits include accidental death coverage and medical payment coverage related to event participation.
Track Day Endorsement
If you participate in HPDE or track day programs, you can add this one, which provides $10,000 in physical damage coverage for your vehicle while participating in track day events, and includes accidental death benefits and medical payment coverage related to participation.
This endorsement is available for $150 per vehicle per year.
If you participate in both autocross and track day events, you can combine the Autocross and HPDE endorsements under the same Motorsports Advantage plan.
Don’t forget that regardless of whether the vehicle is insured through Hagerty or not, all drivers have the option of purchasing Hagerty’s separate per-event HPDE & Track Day Insurance policy to cover the total value of the car, up to $175,000. This is a great option for those with the MAE coverage (with or without the Track Day Endorsement) should they be going to a track where they’re a little nervous about the car’s wellbeing (think Sonoma Raceway, Watkins Glen, and the like). This is additional insurance above and beyond anything you already have for on-track damage and does not require any other Hagerty insurance.
Where Coverage Is Available
Eligibility for these endorsements is based on the state where the policyholder resides, not where an event takes place. For example, if you live in Arizona and hold a Hagerty policy, you could still be covered while participating in an event held in Texas.
Currently, these endorsements are available in the following states: AR, AZ, CO, CT, FL, IL, IN, KS, KY, MA, MO, MS, ND, NH, NM, NY, OH, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, UT, WA, and WI.
Hagerty’s HPDE & Track Day Insurance policy is available in all states except Colorado.
