There’s a title within SCCA® RoadRally motorsports that sometimes goes unnoticed, yet when you look at the results, it’s a story of utter domination. The award is the Manufacturer’s Rally Championship, and 2025’s winner continues a legacy that began back in 1994 and along the way has contributed to the introduction of new members to the Sports Car Club of America™.
In 2025, the Manufacturer’s Rally Championship was won by Subaru, scoring 249 points. MINI came in a close second with 231 points; BMW, Volkswagen, and Ford rounded out the top five. For 2024’s competition year, Subaru won the Manufacturer’s Rally Championship with 203 points, compared to Mazda’s 177 points in second and MINI in third with 156. In 2023, it was Subaru on top again, this time besting Mazda, Ford, MINI, and Mercedes.
You have to go back to 2022 before you find Subaru not leading this competition. That year, Mazda landed in first, followed by MINI in second and Subaru in third.
In the last 25 times that SCCA’s Manufacturer’s Rally Championship has been awarded, Subaru has clinched the top spot an unprecedented 20 times, with the only manufacturers capable of briefly upsetting the cart being Mazda (2023), Volkswagen (2020), MINI (2016), Pontiac (1996), and Toyota (1995).
(Note that the Manufacturer’s Rally Championship was not awarded from 1997-’03.)
This domination was undoubtedly influential in nurturing a partnership between the Sports Car Club of America and Subaru of America where around the turn of the century, Subaru gifted WRX purchasers with a free yearlong membership to the SCCA. It’s not rare to talk to members to this day who were introduced to the SCCA via that program.
Before Subaru
From 1964-’89, the Manufacturer’s Rally Championship award included all National Rallies; then from 1989-’93, this award was separated for National Course and National Tour rallies. These years also saw domination.
The relatively short-lived Manufacturer’s Touring Rally Championship witnessed Toyota, Audi, and Nissan collect one title each, with BMW wrapping the series with a pair of titles.
The Manufacturer’s Course Rally Championship, however, was a different story. Here, Chrysler was first out of the gate, claiming the title from 1964-’66. That was followed by Chevrolet (1967), Volvo (1968), Ford (1969-’70), and Toyota (1989-’93). The domination came by Nissan, which claimed the title 11 times – Nissan was, in fact, the only manufacturer to claim the title between 1971 and 1981.
Impressive, indeed, but Subaru leads Nissan in most consecutive wins, too, as Subaru’s run from 2004-’15 left Subaru one up on Nissan.
The 2026 Leaderboard
The year has barely begun, but even with that, RoadRally points have been logged, and guess which automotive manufacturer currently leads? That’s right: Subaru.
With four events in the bag (Son of Sno* Drift XXVIII, Yucatan Winter Rally, Grumpy Old Man, and 2026 Ohio Winter Rally), Subaru is on top once more with 84 points, which is more than double that of MINI in second place. The rest of the top five so far is an interesting mixture: Chevrolet, Eagle, and Saab.
