The SCCA® Hall of Fame doesn’t just magically happen. Like with nearly everything to do with the Sports Car Club of America™, members (just like you!) volunteer their time to make everything happen. In the case of the SCCA Hall of Fame, four committees work to ensure every SCCA Hall of Fame class is carefully chosen, with each committee serving a very specific purpose in the process. For instance, two committees select potential inductees utilizing guidelines specific to those committees, then those committees submit their selections to a third committee, which determines the next year’s Hall of Fame class. Meanwhile, a fourth committee oversees the process on a global scale, ensuring everything runs smoothly.
You could be on one of these committees!
Before you toss your name in the hat, let’s look at what the SCCA Hall of Fame is, along with how the committees work – then we’ll get to how you can help make the magic happen.
What It Is
SCCA’s Hall of Fame was created in 2005 to preserve, protect, and record the history and accomplishments of the Club for current and future members by recognizing those who have had a significant impact on the Club and motorsports.
Over the last 20 years, more than 100 people have been inducted into the SCCA Hall of Fame. The ledger reads like a who’s who of motorsports, covering everyone from Club visionaries like Cameron Argetsinger, Arthur Gervais, and Marc Gerstein, to racing stars like Denise McCluggage, Mark Donohue, Paul Newman, Roger Penske, Janet Guthrie, and Bobby Rahal, and including those who drove to improve the safety of the sport for all, like John Fitch, Dr. Bob Hubbard, and Jim Downing.
You can check out all of the SCCA Hall of Fame inductees by visiting SCCA’s Hall of Fame website. Clicking on each name will reveal details about why the person was inducted.
The Procedure
Before anyone can be inducted into the SCCA Hall of Fame, nominations must be made.
The first step in the SCCA Hall of Fame process involves the membership nominating people for the Hall of Fame. Each member-submitted nomination is then logged in a database, which the Nomination and Legacy committee members can then sort through. After that, the Selection Committee enters the process.
Nomination Committee
The Nomination Committee is tasked with identifying Hall of Fame nominees from member-submitted nominations. This committee looks for inductees whose primary impact on the Club was within the last 35 years.
Legacy Committee
This committee’s job is similar to the Nomination Committee’s, but the Legacy Committee’s purview is members whose impact on the Club came more than 35 years ago.
Selection Committee
The Nomination and Legacy committees submit their nominations to the Selection Committee, which makes the final determination of who will be inducted into the SCCA Hall of Fame the following year.
Steering Committee
In a way, the Steering Committee manages the Nomination, Legacy, and Selection committees, although from a global perspective. This committee oversees the management and procedures of the SCCA Hall of Fame without being involved in the nomination process.
How You Can Volunteer
The criteria to serve on Hall of Fame selection committees are simple:
- At least 10 years of involvement with the SCCA
- An interest in the history of the SCCA
- The desire to preserve Club history
Committee terms are limited and each year new volunteers are invited to join the process, with those new volunteers being welcomed to the Nomination, Legacy, or Selection committees.
Members interested in applying to volunteer for a SCCA Hall of Fame committee should submit their information to SCCAHoF@scca.com (ideally with the subject line “Hall of Fame Committees”) no later than Nov. 15, 2025. Please include a brief résumé/CV of SCCA experience and involvement, including the areas of the Club you are/were most involved (Road Racing, Solo®, RoadRally, RallyCross®, Time Trials, or volunteering).
For those with a passion for motorsport and the SCCA, volunteering on one of the SCCA Hall of Fame committees will undoubtedly be an extraordinarily interesting and rewarding experience.
