Strap On and Head Out: Why Time Trials Nationals is Crucial to Your Time Attack Challenge Season

Before yinz crack open an Iron Cities beer and put some Heinz on a panini (the fries are already there), you should know a few things about the Sept. 19-21, 2025, Tire Rack SCCA® Time Trials Nationals at Pittsburgh International Race Complex (Pitt Race).

First things first: Yes, Time Trials Nationals is part of the Tire Rack SCCA Time Attack Challenge season. And yes, even though this event is taking place at Pitt Race for the first time ever, it’s still the Time Trials Nationals.

What’s different? A season-long point race that culminates at Pitt Race.

Don’t get us wrong, a win at Time Trials Nationals is still a huge deal. Like, super big. But this year, the points race adds a new element of drama and intrigue to the already exciting weekend.

How the Points Work

The best two regular season performances at Tire Rack SCCA Time Attack Challenge weekends get added to your Tire Rack SCCA Time Trials Nationals finish to give you your season-long class points.

But there’s a twist.

During the regular season, it’s 10 points for a win, 7 points for second, 5 for third, 3 for a fourth-place finish, 2 for fifth, and 1 for sixth. That’s right, points are only for first through sixth. Add in an extra point for a track record, and that’s the total for that event. Take your two best Time Attack Challenge weekends, add the points together, and that’s your total heading into Time Trials Nationals.

The Pitt Race showdown then cranks up the drama.

During Time Trials Nationals, more points are available. It’s still the top six, but on a 16/12/10/8/6/4 scale from first to sixth. Set a track record? That’s now worth 5 points! But don’t think that new track record will come easy – while this is the first time Time Trials Nationals has been hosted at Pitt Race, the series has been going to that facility pretty regularly since 2019, meaning any new track records will need to be earned.

The Leader Board

We won’t run down all of the point battles – you can find that listing here – but we will say that no one has locked down a title just yet.

Twelve drivers across all classes have 22 points – two wins and two track records. In Sport 2, it’s currently a tie at the top between Brian Smith and Tim Mason, each with 22, while Richard Michael Sawicki II and Ryan Carwile are also tied with 22 points each in Tuner 5.

In Club Spec Mustang, Michael Bard leads Trevor Kindlon by a single point, 22 to 21. It’s the same story in Tuner 1 between Jason Anderson and Ben Bulthuis. In Sport 5, the delta is the same between Hiroshi Witt leading Aldrin Natividad, although the point count is different.

In Max 2, the gap between leader Michael Kubiak and Robert Howard Wilmoth III is barely three points –since the point earning potential is cranked up for Time Trials Nationals, this is as much of a dead heat as those currently tied at 22.

All of this is to say that if you’re even upwards of 15 points behind and your main competitor isn’t attending Time Trials Nationals, a class win could be enough to lock in the season-long title

Beyond the Points

Whether you’re going for an event win, the points title, or you’re just looking for a good time – the Sept. 19-21, 2025, Tire Rack SCCA Time Trials Nationals will offer more than on-track action. It’s going to offer so much eye candy with SUPERFLY on site.

What’s SUPERFLY? We covered that in this announcement, but the long and short of it is it’s an awesome car show that celebrates vehicles from the 1990s and 2000s, although all makes and models are welcome. Yet it’s more than a car show – it’s a lifestyle that keeps the party going.

In other words, from the moment you arrive at Pitt Race until you pull out on Sunday, it’ll be nonstop #funwithcars.

Want to be a part of it? The event’s coming up fast, and we want you there! Whether you’re a participant, volunteer, or spectator, it’s going to be awesome.
