There was Nothing Tricky About This Time Attack Challenge Weekend at Pocono, Just Fun and Speed

The Tire Rack SCCA® Time Attack Challenge rolled along during the July 19-20, 2025, weekend in Long Pond, PA, at Pocono Raceway, taking advantage of two different configurations at the Tricky Triangle to add even more challenge to an already competitive weekend.

An impressive 90 cars were on track for the combined Time Attack Challenge and Hagerty Track Day event, all of which ran under fantastic weather.

Like a good July day, the on-track activity was hot.

At Speed

Jackie Ding absolutely crushed the existing Tire Rack SCCA Time Attack Challenge overall lap record in his Unlimited 1 BMW M2, running a lap of 1:28.483 to better the top flying lap from a season ago. To be fair to Daniel Dobalo’s 2024 mark of 1:34.978, that came in a Tuner 1 Corvette, which remains an impressive time.

Jacob Glover came back in 2025 and dropped his Sport 1 time in a Chevrolet Corvette by more than two seconds to reset that class record and dip below Dobalo’s previous mark as well. As you can imagine, Glover won Sport 1 with his 1:33.566 lap on Sunday.

Even when records were not reset, the competition was pure fire.

The margin of victory in Max 2 would have been impressive in an autocross. But a 0.003sec win on a more than 2-mile layout over two days? Insane! But there it is, with Manuel Jusino just about a tenth behind Benjamin Smolen on Saturday, then flipping the script on Sunday for the class victory.

What makes it even better is that the Sport 3 class, on a typical weekend, would have been considered a tight race between three drivers in very different cars. Bryan Tripoli led the way in his Acura Integra, posting the best time each day to top Fouad Al-Rijleh’s Volkswagen Golf by 2.676sec. David Albrecht was just another 1.3sec back from that in his Honda Civic.

Superlatives

The Tire Rack SCCA Time Attack Challenge is not all about those at the top of the time sheets – the superlative awards are there to celebrate other successes.

At Pocono, the team awarded Lauren Rose as the “Spirit of Time Trials,” and it’s easy to see why. Rose had originally planned to enter the event as a driver using a scholarship from SCCA Women on Track, but the best laid plans went out the window while she was swapping tires and she injured her hand, leaving her unable to drive. Did she stay home? Of course not! She traveled to the event with her friends from the Washington DC Region – but rather than just chill in the paddock, she asked how she could help run the event. She was a rockstar in grid the entire weekend, proving that this is truly a team event.

Timothy Lampke showed up for his second Time Attack Challenge event and only his fourth or fifth time on track after three years of autocross. Naturally, he took it easy, right? Wrong. Lampke drove his Toyota Supra to a fifth-place overall finish, second in Max 1, to earn the Top Novice award at the event.

One of the most exciting awards for the Time Attack Challenge staff is the Crossover Award, given to a driver (or set of drivers) who typically use their car in other disciplines – whether that be autocross, rally, or road racing – and comes to see what the hubbub around Time Attack is all about. Road racers Abbie Trexler, Shawn Trexler, and Mike Marzo came to Pocono with three Mini Coopers and were all smiles throughout the event.
