Dominance, Adventure and Gridwork a Slice of Saturday’s Hoosier Super Tour at The Glen

Western New York is absolutely beautiful this time of year. Everything is green across rolling hills, and shimmering lakes look ultra inviting. The sound of racecars adds to the area’s allure this weekend as the Hoosier Racing Tire SCCA® Super Tour® (HST) series wraps up its 10-event season June 27-29, 2025, at Watkins Glen International.

The gathering, which is part of the Summit Racing Equipment SCCA Road Racing program, is being hosted by SCCA’s Glen Region. After Friday’s practice and opening round of qualifying, drivers across all seven run groups got a second qualifying session Saturday morning around the 3.4-mile, 11-turn circuit. After that it was time for 25-minute contests to reveal the first set of victors.

Mast Sails Back to Mustang Land

Defending Touring 3 (T3) National Champion Marshall Mast, of SCCA’s Philadelphia Region, is making his one and only HST appearance at Watkins Glen this weekend. It’s a track he loves, and one at which he gobbled up two T3 victories last year.

“It’s just a blast,” Mast said about The Glen. “There are fast, sweeping corners with lots of banking and lots of grip. The first year I went there was actually kind of intimidating with just the speed that should be carried around the whole track.”

Something is different this weekend, however, as the Pontiac Solstice GXP Mast used to sweep last year’s HST races and claim Runoffs® T3 supremacy is up for sale and awaiting a buyer at Phoenix Performance. Instead, Mast is driving a Ford Mustang once again – a platform in which he claimed three previous National Championships.

This particular Mustang was previously campaigned in Touring 2 by a Phoenix customer who traded the car back in. With permission, Mast popped in a V6 motor and drivetrain to make the vessel eligible for T3, and he has already had success in the vehicle this year at a couple U.S. Majors Tour® weekends.

“It’s kind of like riding a bike,” Mast said of racing a Mustang once again. “You hop into a Mustang and it’s all smiles from there on out. They’re just fun cars to drive.”

Mast’s winning ways continued Saturday as he took the No. 31 Phoenix/Hawk/Hoosier Ford Mustang to a T3 triumph. The winning margin was 32 seconds.

Retirement Celebration

After three decades working for Microsoft, Tom Burt ‘mostly’ retired last year. To celebrate that achievement, the 70-year-old member of SCCA’s Northwest Region decided to spend 2025 competing in Spec Racer Ford Gen3 (SRF3) contests at all HST stops across the country.

“It was just a crazy notion to do something that seemed like it would be fun, challenging and give me a shot at competing for the National Points Championship for the Master’s Group in Spec Racer Ford,” Burt said. “And I just wanted to do something as a bit of a car racing adventure now that I’m mostly retired.”

The escapade has taken Burt, who joined SCCA in 1991, to tracks he hadn’t been to before or visited in many years. Getting an SRF3 car to all 10 events, however, took some logistical planning. But help from Flat Out Racing and friends made it happen.

Burt’s car has been cared for by Flat Out Racing in Vancouver, WA, for many years. This year, Flat Out Racing hauled Burt’s vehicle to a handful of races, and he borrowed the prep shop’s loaner vessel when needed. For East Coast events, fellow HST devotee Scotty B. White helped by shuttling the car around, too. The one outlier weekend was at NOLA Motorsports Park in Louisiana. Luckily, Burt had a friend who loaned him a car for that contest.

Sebring International Raceway, Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta and NOLA were the circuits Burt visited for the very first time during this year’s nationwide journey. Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course was the venue he hadn’t seen in almost a decade, and this weekend’s visit to The Glen is also a ‘return’ after an extended absence.

“It has been a fantastic adventure,” Burt said. “The best part has honestly been getting the chance to know more of the drivers from around the country, especially among the Master’s Class. A lot of the drivers I’ve raced with this year, I’ve seen their cars and know their numbers, but I didn’t know who they were, really. The chance to connect with them in impound and on the podium afterwards, they are just some great people.”

Burt has had a really successful expedition. Coming into this final weekend he had finished all but one race, the anomaly being Sunday’s contest at Sebring. Unfortunately, Saturday’s race at The Glen became the second race of the year he was unable to finish after his car left the track at the Toe of The Boot.

That ‘off’ occurred late in the race, which ended under full-course yellow. That gave Saturday’s SRF3 victory to Caleb Shrader in the No. 99 Consonus Healthcare machine.

Broring Never Bored with SCCA

Some may believe you’re either a driver or a volunteer when it comes to SCCA Road Racing. That couldn’t be further from the truth, and Carolyn Bayer-Broring is a splendid example of that fact.

A member of SCCA’s Washington DC Region, Carolyn and her husband, Tom, joined Sports Car Club of America® in 1994 to get involved in autocross. A few years later, they both got their Road Racing competition license and have been ripping around tracks ever since.

But when Carolyn isn’t competing in H Production races, you can probably find her helping out with Grid duties. In fact, she was the 2007 Pit & Grid Worker of the Year. And this weekend at The Glen she’s lending a hand as a Pit worker before helping out with victory podium celebrations Sunday.

“I’ve done a lot of Specialties,” Carolyn noted of her experience volunteering with SCCA. “I’ve worked Tech, Registration, Timing and Scoring. I’ve pitched in a lot when help is needed at different tracks. But Grid is really my primary thing.

“You get to meet all the drivers,” Carolyn continued about her passion for Grid. “You see all the cars, you see all the drivers in their cars, you see their crew. It’s really the one spot where you really get to see every single person that is behind the wheel of a car.”

According to Carolyn, the primary focus of Grid duty is driver safety. Making sure drivers are properly fitted with all their safety gear, and cars are up to snuff, is a big part of that undertaking. An added benefit for those managing Grid is they’ll easily reach an exercise goal of 10,000 steps a day, plus gain great friendships along the way.

Being a member of SCCA and volunteering at events opens a whole realm of experiences and adventures few know are possible. Learn more about volunteering with SCCA by clicking here.

Super Tour Coverage Wraps Sunday from The Glen

There’s only one more day of HST racing left in the season. So don’t miss a moment Sunday as the action gets rolling at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time from Watkins Glen International. All seven run groups will see another round of competition, but this time contests will be 14 laps or 35 minutes to decide who gathers up trophies and commemorative bottles of Mazza Vineyards sparkling wine.

HST’s free, multi-camera broadcast will be back Sunday, too, and can be found at SCCA’s YouTube page. Produced by DriversEye Live, commentary will again be provided by Brian Bielanski and Gregg Ginsberg. Live HST Timing & Scoring is also available throughout the weekend at scca.com/live, plus find Sunday victory podium celebrations videos at the SCCA Road Racing Facebook page.
