A Packed Paddock and Feisty Field Made for a Solo Nat Tour in Lincoln a Spring Nationals to Remember

An incredible 270-plus competitors turned times on Memorial Day weekend at the May 24-26, 2025, Tire Rack SCCA® Lincoln Solo® National Tour – the back half of the traditional “Spring Nationals” weekend that hosts both the Tire Rack SCCA ProSolo® Series and Solo National Tour events on the large concrete expanse at Lincoln Airpark. This is the same Nebraska site that also hosts the Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships in September, making Spring Nationals a must-attend for anyone serious about making a run for a National Championship title.

The weather for the Nebraska Region-hosted event was excellent: overcast and a little cool. Well, that’s not completely true, as Sunday started wet with drying conditions. We’ll get to how that played out in a moment. But first, let’s talk about Cathy Kenny – she was this event’s recipient of the SCCA Women on Track Driver Development program, offering her free coaching from a National-caliber autocrosser. Kenny’s coaching came courtesy of Van Townsend, and ultimately helped her land a solid finish in the Ladies Street Tire Bump class in her D Street Ladies Honda Civic Type R.

Meanwhile, Laney Blume’s performance that put her on top of the Ladies Index earned her the SCCA Women on Track Pay it Forward award, where she can gift a free National Solo entry to a woman from her Region.

Class Competition

No one ever accused the F Modified community of being afraid of a good time, so when the skies opened up, guess who was there? Brandon Thomas was quickest on Monday, but Matt Murphy’s Novakar J9 skated around the course quickly enough to hold his Sunday lead by 0.701sec at the finish.

Mike Casino held the first day lead in SMF through the first and second Monday runs, but didn’t have enough to hold on late. Craig Wilcox put down a third run to jump Casino, ultimately finishing second when Jonathon Bennett laid down a flyer on his last run to win the class.

If there’s ever an award for best rain driver, it might be named after Heath Helmick. Helmick was 1.5sec quicker than any other Solo Spec Coupe driver in the rain, giving him enough of a cushion to jump from fourth on Sunday to the class win by 0.897sec.

Earlier in the day, the dry conditions changed the course.

Jake Rogers dropped a half-second on his final run to take the win in E Street by only 0.205sec over Bartek Borowski in a battle of Mazda Miatas. Greg Reno also retook the lead in D Street on his final run, improving by over one second to lock in victory over Brady Loretz.

Ron Williams got a lone truly dry run on Sunday and coned it away, leaving a small hole to dig out of on Monday. He did it with ease, though, running away to a 0.517sec win in G Street.

The Club Spec classes continue to pick up steam and size. Jeremy Wilson won Club Spec MX-5 by 0.353sec over Ricky Crow; Kristo Kukk was the Club Spec Mustang winner by 0.639sec over Kevin Buchholz; Crissy Hedrick held a 0.885sec advantage over Carla Russo at the end of the weekend in Club Spec Mustang Ladies.
