Radical Mid-Ohio Hoosier Super Tour Weekend had Wiley Driver and Two Types of Chip

The eighth Hoosier Racing Tire SCCA Super Tour® (HST) stop of 2025 wrapped up Sunday at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course located midway between Cleveland and Columbus. Part of the Summit Racing Equipment SCCA Road Racing program, the May 16-18 meetup was hosted by SCCA’s Ohio Valley Region and saw fantastic competition around the 2.4-mile Club circuit with 15 turns – one of which was the original ‘Keyhole’ complex.

Sunday presented perfect weather conditions for 35-minute or 20-lap races that tested Hawk Brakes and driver skill. There were clear skies for morning contests, then things clouded over a bit as temperatures peaked in the upper 60-degree range. That kept it relatively comfortable for drivers across all seven run groups as Sunoco race fuel propelled many to trophies and bottles of Mazza Vineyards sparkling wine.

Herr Having Twice the Fun

The Super Touring Under (STU) Runoffs® Champion two years straight is Chip Herr. He was at Mid-Ohio this weekend in the No. 17 Warwick Autopark/Carbotech/Hoosier/MCS/Roux Audi A4, and qualified on pole for Saturday’s race. But when cars pulled away from grid, he wasn’t at the front.

That’s because Herr was further back driving the No. 97 Warwick Autopark/Hoosier/Carbotech/MCS Toyota 86, which was part of the Touring 4 (T4) field. It’s a racecar Herr bought from a friend, and he jokes the acquisition was made because there was still room on his trailer.

“It’s a Phoenix Performance-built car, built by some of the best in the business,” Herr said. “T4 is a great class, and I think it’s really strong.

“This was not planned,” Herr explained about the purchase. “I’m still learning the T4 car. It’s kind of a cool Miata in my opinion.”

Herr never before campaigned two different cars at the same time during HST weekends. Adding to the complexity, STU and T4 were part of the same run group at Mid-Ohio. That meant he toggled back-n-forth from one car to the next over qualifying sessions.

This was only the second weekend Herr drove his new T4 machine, and he ended up fourth Saturday in a race won by Ayden Rose in the No. 46 Mazda Miata. On Sunday, however, Herr was back in STU and took home a first-place trophy once again. Behind him was Saturday’s STU winner David Fiorelli in the No. 190 Ford Mustang.

Wiley with Age

It was 2022 when Travis Wiley, of SCCA’s Lone Star Region, secured the SCCA First Gear Mazda Challenge victory. That initiative was designed for drivers under the age of 25 who raced HST events in Spec Miata (SM). The runner-up to Wiley that year was Connor Zilisch.

As the highest points getter that season, Wiley earned free entry to SCCA’s National Championship Runoffs in SM, as well as a free pass to the first round of Mazda’s MX-5 Cup Shootout. An additional bonus was helpful publicity that generated a heightened awareness of the young man’s abilities.

Since then, Wiley has further explored the world of motorsport. The 21-year-old college student has climbed into cars with increased horsepower, participated in a multitude of events, and faced ever increasing talent such as that found in the Porsche Carrera Cup.

“Being in different car formats is really good for me,” he said. “It helps me adapt to all different things, especially with limited practice sometimes.”

Even though he’s a busy guy, Wiley still pops up at HST events to partake in some SM racing. This weekend at Mid-Ohio was actually his fourth HST meet of the year, and he’s always glad to be back in the paddock and amongst friends.

“I really enjoy this, and it’s good to spend time with my family,” Wiley admitted. “I just love the racing, and I’ve been doing it since I was a kid. I have so many great friends here that it’s just as enjoyable as anything else I’d be doing anywhere else on a weekend.”

The No. 78 Hoosier/Carbotech/Xfactor/Flatout Motorsports Mazda Miata was what Wiley played in this weekend, and he earned two top-15 finishes. The big SM winner at Mid-Ohio, however, was Max Stallone in the No. 103 Mazda Miata. He managed a sweep by claiming two SM victories over two days.

A Radical Appearance

It’s not often we see a Radical at HST weekends. But sure enough there was one at Mid-Ohio competing in the Prototype class.

The No. 17 Proper Performance Radical SR3 was driven by Vaughn Glace of SCCA’s Steel Cities Region. Since Glace had access to the sleek machine, and doesn’t live too far from Mid-Ohio, he decided to come out and have #funwithcars.

Radicals have long been welcomed in several SCCA Road Racing classes. In 2024, the sports racers were actually given their own Regional-only race classes, which are SR1 and SR3. Radicals can also compete in the Prototype and Prototype 2 class, albeit they are often underdogs.

“Power isn’t the huge limiting factor for us,” Glace said about driving a Radical in Prototype competition. “It’s actually weight and aero.

“The Radical is heavier, and we carry more mass around, which kills us kind of everywhere on track,” Glace continued. “Aero is an issue because we don’t have tunnels. We’re flat-floored.”

While the car may not have been favored to win the Prototype class this weekend, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t come out for some seat time and to let race fans ogle a cool vehicle. And who knows, maybe a visit to the Runoffs might be in the cards somewhere down the road.

“SCCA provides a lot of track time, with similar paced cars, and at a reasonable price,” Glace noted. “This is my first weekend in this type of Radical … and I’m new to Radical racing this year. So this was a good opportunity to log some hours at a competitive pace.”

Glace managed a runner-up finish in Saturday’s Prototype race but didn’t hit the circuit Sunday. Perry Richardson, in the No. 69 Kevin Mitz/Kraus Tires/Roger Kraus Racing/George Dean Racing Engines/Jongbloed Wheels/Cobalt Brakes Stohr WF1, did take to the track both days and claimed victory twice.
