’24 Sebring Super Tour: At A Glance

We’ve already watched the ball drop, but the real New Year doesn’t begin until the first competition tire hits the pavement in the Sebring International Raceway paddock on Jan. 12-14, 2024. That’s when more than 350 racers will unload in south-central Florida for the first Hoosier Racing Tire SCCA® Super Tour of the year, hitting the track in search of victory and, in many cases, a Runoffs invitation.

As has become tradition, the Sebring event brings competitors from near and far to get out of the cold and onto the track – with many kicking off the season even earlier at the U.S. Majors Tour event at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Sebring is a spectacular Super Tour season opener at arguably the most historic road course in the United States. Sebring International Raceway is now 73 years old and, in addition to the 12 Hours of Sebring, has hosted Trans Am and World Endurance Championship races and even the 1959 Formula 1 season finale, won by Bruce McLaren. At the time, McLaren was the youngest driver to ever win a Formula 1 Race.

Don’t Fret At Home

Can’t get out of the house for the weekend? Don’t worry, we’ve still got you covered. DriversEye Live and commentators Gregg Ginsberg and Brian Bielanski return to live stream the weekend, with several upgrades over the event streaming debut a year ago.

If 2023 was all about how to stream a Hoosier Super Tour event, the 2024 season’s focus is on what makes the broadcast better. That starts with upgraded cameras – more zoom and better streaming quality mean there’s an opportunity to see more of the action than ever before. On screen, viewers will notice an upgraded graphics package. DriversEye Live president Brendan Kaczmarek has promised new opportunities for fan engagement. What does that mean? You’ll need to tune in during the Sebring weekend to find out.

Just as importantly, Ginsberg and Bielanski continue to learn more about all of the players in this highspeed on-track drama, allowing them to report on the action even better. But remember, the reason you hear them all day, every day is because they’re in the booth – this year, they’re incorporating locals to discover information and stories throughout the weekend to help paint an even better picture of the weekend.

Event coverage will stream live on SCCA’s YouTube and Road Racing Facebook pages, so be sure to subscribe now.

The event schedule will let you know when to tune in.

No Place Like It

There’s no place like Sebring International Raceway. Laid out on a World War II airfield, the heavy-duty concrete from that era remains in many sections and treats a driver and a car exactly the way you’d expect 80-year-old concrete to react.

There’s a reason “respect the bumps” is a common saying there – it will upset a race car if it isn’t acknowledged.

But it’s also fast. The layout challenges everything a racing driver knows. And if you’ve got horsepower, skill, and determination, this is one place you can let it all rip. That’s evident just from the entry list. Formula Atlantic has eight cars coming, the ground pounders of GT-1 have 11, and GT-2 has 15 cars registered. It shapes up for one heck of a ride.

Welcome Home SMX

Last year at the SCCA National Championship Runoffs, the Spec MX-5 Championship held its season finale as a supplemental race. That introduction to the larger SCCA field was just the first step, as the class is now a fully formed program ready to compete at Hoosier Super Tours, U.S. Majors Tours, the Runoffs, and beyond.

Built on the NC generation of Mazda Miatas, the Spec MX-5 (SMX) class has proven to be everything you’d expect from the roadster-based class. Close racing, hard driving, and wild finishes have become the norm, with skill required to win.

The most fun is that the Sebring entry list contains a mix of familiar and soon-to-be-familiar faces. Former Touring 4 National Champion Michael Borden has long been a proponent of the SMX class, and he’ll face T4 rival Marc Cefalo in the field. David Pintaric is probably more closely associated with his GT-1 and other high horsepower machinery, but is giving the Spec MX-5 class a run.

On the other end of the spectrum are a trio of drivers who may not be household names just yet, but have a chance to be by the end of the weekend. Ethan Jacobs, Helio Meza, and Kamden Hibbitt ripped their way through the Mazda Shootout to add their names to the Mazda Factory Team roster for the 2024 season. The youngsters get some additional benefits from the Mazda Motorsports team, including coaching, advice, and partnerships. Any of them could be contenders.
