At Age 74, He Was an Autocross Rookie

“Damn it, I’m going to do it!”

Really, that’s the key to anything, isn’t it? Just decide that you’re giving up on the excuses and looking for reasons not to do it, then get started. That most definitely applies to motorsports.

It can take time, and that’s ok.

For Drew Hierwarter, it took 74 years – but now he’s hooked. This motorsports photographer had always been around the track, but never really got behind the wheel. Then, he bought an NB Miata, and everything changed.

That’s when he told himself to just do it – and he did, with no concern about his age despite being an autocross rookie at 74-years old. When he started, he found all of those previous fears of the unknown were unfounded, and his newfound SCCA friends were very helpful.

“They want you to come and learn autocross,” Hierwarter, now an Eastern Tennessee Region member of the SCCA®, said. “They have a high tolerance for beginners. If it’s your first time, they’ll help you. They have instructors who will ride with you.”

Editor J.A. Ackley and the Grassroots Motorsports team were with Hierwarter, now an old hat at autocross at 76-years old, at one of his recent events. Like many NB Miatas, he fits nicely into the competitive E Street class, where his biggest competition – like most of us – is himself.

Is he enjoying it? We think you already know the answer to that, but you can get more of the details from our friends at Grassroots Motorsports by clicking here.

If you’ve reached your “I’m going to do it!” moment, too – no matter your age – there’s no better time to start than now. Click here to find an SCCA event near you.
