2023 Hoosier Super Tour Nationwide Points Champs

With the 2023 Hoosier Racing Tire SCCA® Super Tour in the books, and the 2023 SCCA National Championship Runoffs® complete, it’s time to announce the 2023 Hoosier Super Tour Nationwide Points Champions for each of the 27 car classes.

This year’s points tabulation for each driver consists of the best six finishes from 20 Hoosier Super Tour races conducted over 10 weekends from January to June. A competitor’s performance at the Runoffs was then added as a seventh score to the tally. Winners earned 25 points per race, and 21 points went to runners-up. Points were then doled out to others starting with 18 and descending to a single point for the 20th finisher.

Some Close Contests

Only one driver managed to claim two separate Nationwide Points Championships in 2023, and that competitor was Danny Steyn. Driving a Mazda MX-5, he triumphed in Super Touring® Lite over runner-up Amy Mills for his third straight Nationwide Points Championship in the class. Then of the 217 drivers listed as Spec Miata Hoosier Super Tour competitors this season, Steyn and his Mazda Miata finished atop that mountain. However, it was a close battle as Steyn only beat out his teammate, Charles Mactutus, by five points.

The E Production class was also decided by only five points, with Albert Correia and his Porsche Boxster getting the better of runner-up Peter Norton in a Lotus/Caterham 7 America. And six points was the deciding difference in Prototype 1 as the Nationwide Points Championship went to Jim Devenport over Chip Romer, with both men piloting Elan DP02 cars.

Seven points was Charles Russell Turner’s margin of victory in Formula Enterprises® 2 (FE2) over runner-up Caleb Shrader. For the record, Turner in FE2 was the only driver to hit the 175-point maximum this year. But Shrader didn’t leave the season empty handed as he claimed the Nationwide Points Championship in the massive 202-entrant Spec Racer Ford Gen3 class.

Even more exciting, a couple Nationwide Points Championships were decided by only two points. B-Spec was one of those classes, where Frank Schwartz and his Mini Clubman won out over a Mazda 2 driven by Joseph McClughan. The other class was GT-3, where Ray Stephenson and his Mazda RX-7 got the better of Collin Jackson and his trusty Nissan 240SX.
