In the News: Southern West Virginia Region Autocross

An autocross is just an autocross, right? For many of us, we take these monthly gatherings of speed in local parking lots for granted. Sure, we love the challenge and thrill, but these events are one of many facts of life: The sun rises in the morning, your front yard’s grass always grows too much the day before you leave for a business trip, and your local SCCA Region hosts autocrosses with regularity. The thing is, “even” a Regional autocross is a newsworthy event – as SCCA’s Southern West Virginia Region recently discovered.

WTAP in Parkersburg, WV, caught wind of a Southern West Virginia Region autocross and sent a camera crew to capture the action, which was shown on the news. On site was Gregg Rome, Southern West Virginia Region’s Regional Executive.

“It’s just a lot of like-minded people who like cars or motorsports and stuff like that,” he explained to WTAP viewers on camera. “It’s a lot of fun to drive around in an empty parking lot legally – the comradery and the spirit of the competition and everything like that.”

The autocross took place in the northern parking lot at the West Virginia University at Parkersburg, which features a large expanse of pavement perfect for autocross and other special events.
