’23 June Sprints Hoosier Super Tour: At A Glance

Unfathomable as it may seem, the 2023 Hoosier Racing Tire SCCA® Super Tour (HST) “regular season” comes to a close at Road America in Elkhart Lake, WI, June 23-25 during the WeatherTech Chicago Region® June Sprints®.

Celebrating its 68th consecutive year, the June Sprints will be the 10th and final HST race weekend of the year. It’s a fabulous three days of action at an incredible venue, with the event open to spectators. A three-day ticket is $65 to take in all the racing and fantastic food. Admission for only Friday is $25, and single-day entry for Saturday or Sunday is $35 a ticket.

Those who can’t make it to Wisconsin to enjoy the weekend trackside can follow all the action online for free thanks to Hoosier Super Tour’s enhanced video and audio package. The familiar voices of motorsport commentators Brian Bielanski and Gregg Ginsberg will provide play-by-play commentary, and DriversEye Live will present the video broadcast featuring up to 12 cameras – plus in-car video where possible.

Coverage is streamed live via the SCCA Official YouTube channel and SCCA Inc. Facebook page. Post-race video interviews with some winners, as well as victory podium celebrations, can be viewed at the SCCA Road Racing Facebook page. As usual, Live Timing and Scoring can be monitored throughout the weekend at www.scca.com/live.

Sprints Schedule

As always, Road America’s fast and challenging 4.048-mile, 14-turn circuit will be the playing field for SCCA racers at the June Sprints. However, the track was recently resurfaced, which means competitors will likely be learning something new during this visit to the familiar course that last hosted the SCCA Runoffs three years ago.

The fun begins Friday morning at 8 a.m. Central Time with 25-minute qualifying sessions for each of the nine run groups. After that, the first six run groups will have another 25-minute qualifying session on track before the day ends.

On Saturday, beginning at 8:15 a.m. local time, the final three run groups will have their second 25-minute qualifying sessions. Then at 10 a.m., competition starts with 25-minute contests for each of the nine run groups until the day comes to a close.

Sunday is all about competition, with races starting at 8:15 a.m. Central Time. Drivers across eight of the nine run groups will have 13 laps to decide who gets the trophies, with the fast GT, Touring 1, and American Sedan race group running a 15-lap race.

Sprints Competition

More than 400 entries are anticipated at this year’s June Sprints, and names on the entry list include many Runoffs champions, as well as a host of previous June Sprints winners. It’s going to be one heck of an event, featuring some of the best wheel-to-wheel racing SCCA has to offer.

The largest field at the June Sprints will likely be Spec Racer® Ford Gen3 (SRF3) boasting nearly 80 entrants. That fifth run group race will undoubtably be a spectacle not to be missed, especially since the field includes a number of drivers who have already triumphed during HST weekends this year. Of course, Bobby Sak will be one to watch in the No. 19 car as he swept both SRF3 races at last year’s June Sprints.

The second largest field, with nearly 60 cars, will be Spec Miata (SM). This third run group contest will also be a can’t-miss race. Just like SRF3, drivers in the field include many who have already claimed HST victories this year. One racer to certainly keep an eye on is Nicholas Bruni in the No. 1 car, as he is the reigning SM National Champion.

The fourth run group will also generate excitement. There, you’ll find 25 B-Spec cars, including the No. 19 of Joseph Gersch. Last year, Gersch swept both B-Spec wins at Road America. But a whole host of talented drivers will do their best to stop that scenario from repeating itself this year.

A special treat in the form of a fabulous Formula Atlantic (FA) field also awaits June Sprints spectators. Nearly 20 FA cars are anticipated in the second run group, which is a very healthy herd for that class. Dudley Fleck and Steve Forrer, who drive car No. 74 and No. 84 respectively, split wins at the 2022 June Sprints. They’re both back this year, and are undoubtedly eyeing double victories.

Fields of a dozen or more cars are also anticipated in Formula F, Formula Vee®, Formula Enterprises®2, GT-1, GT-2, F Production, Touring 2, Touring 3, and Touring 4.
