Making News: Road Racer Austin Hill

At just age 16, it’s hard to believe that Ohio Valley Region’s Austin Hill would have an extensive SCCA® Road Racing resume. Still, he does, and it’s a fact that’s being noted in the media, most recently by the Chillicothe Gazette, Ohio’s oldest newspaper published just south of Columbus.

“At 16 years old, many kids are getting behind the wheel of their first car, but at that point, Austin Hill had already been driving on a track for over eight years in various vehicles,” wrote Chillicothe Gazette reporter Shelby Reeves.

The article explains that Hill has competed in various SCCA series, including the Hoosier Racing Tire Super Tour, as well as SCCA Pro Racing-sanctioned series like FRP’s F2000 and Formula Atlantic Championship Series.

While not specifically listed in the article, Hill’s accomplishments at the SCCA National Championship Runoffs® is exceptional, competing in Formula X and Formula Atlantic in both 2021 and ’22, earning three podium finishes in the process.

The article also covers the Hill family’s racing background:

Following in his father's footsteps, Hill started racing in the quarter midget races at just seven years old, he would eventually go on to race go-karts and then move on to bigger open-wheeled track cars. His father, Andy, was a sprint car driver and Austin said whenever he would see his dad, Andy, race he also wanted to race.

Since then, he and his family have traveled the country participating in, and winning, several different series. Just last year, Hill had eight wins, 14 second-place [finishes] and four third-place [finishes], putting him on the podium 75 percent of the time when he raced.

Being a high school student, the question of education soon took center stage in the article, with Hill explaining how he keeps up with schoolwork while remaining competitive in multiple race classes and series.
