’23 Portland Hoosier Super Tour: At A Glance

The 10-weekend, coast-to-coast 2023 Hoosier Racing Tire SCCA® Super Tour series is in full swing, heading to the Pacific Northwest for a weekend of wheel-to-wheel racing on May 13-14 at Portland International Raceway (PIR) during an event hosted by SCCA’s Oregon Region.

Spectators are welcome, and admission is free. Those who can’t make it out to PIR can follow the racing online for free thanks to Hoosier Super Tour’s enhanced video and audio package. The voices of motorsport commentators Brian Bielanski and Gregg Ginsberg will provide play-by-play commentary, and DriversEye Live will present the video broadcast featuring up to 12 cameras – plus in-car video where possible.

Coverage is streamed live via the SCCA Official YouTube channel and SCCA Inc. Facebook page. Post-race video interviews with many of the winners, and victory podium celebrations can also be viewed at the SCCA Road Racing Facebook page.

Live Timing and Scoring can be monitored throughout the weekend at www.scca.com/live. On-demand viewing of Super Tour races will be available after the events on SCCA’s Official YouTube channel.

The Portland Plan

The eighth of 10 stops on this year’s Hoosier Super Tour schedule, the visit to PIR is a two-day foray conducted on the venue’s 12-turn, 1.977-mile circuit. This layout includes the Shelton Chicane – consisting of Turns 1, 2, and 3 – which is where races can be won or lost on any given lap.

The program gets rolling Saturday at 9 a.m. Pacific Time with 20-minute qualifying sessions for each of the six run groups. After a lunch break, the groups head back on track beginning at 12:25 p.m. for 25-minute contests to decide day-one winners across as many as 27 car classes.

A second round of qualifying begins on Sunday at 9 a.m. local time with 15-minute sessions for all drivers. That will be followed by 35-minute or 25-lap races, with the first race scheduled to begin at 11:55 a.m. after a lunch break.

Portland Players

The largest field of the weekend with 16 entries is Spec Racer Ford Gen3 (SRF3). Usually found at the front of that class is Todd Harris and his sons, Calvin and Taylor. But it was Caleb Shrader who won the last SRF3 HST race in Portland. All four drivers are on the entry list again, and it’s hard to imagine there won’t be another great race between these aces when they take the track in run group three.

Formula Vee (FV) has also proven to be a nailbiter each year at PIR. Seven FV cars will compete in the first run group, and several of those drivers have a proven record in Portland. At last year’s HST event, Quinn Posner and Aaron Robins split FV wins on the weekend. They’re both back again this year and will surely put on a show for race fans.

Touring 4 (T4), which is part of the fourth run group, also arrives to PIR with a healthy group of competitors. That seven-car field consists of three Mazdas and three Scions, all of which might be chasing the Ford Mustang of Scotty B. White as he looks to defend his Sunday victory in T4 during last year’s HST PIR event.

Deviating from the norm, Spec Miata (SM) will not have its own run group in Portland, offering the potential for dramatic mixed-class racing. Jason Rawlins is considered a Spec Miata favorite after sweeping the class during last year’s Portland Super Tour. Also appearing in that run group will be B-Spec, E, F, and H Production, GT-Lite, and the Spec MX-5 Challenge Series – the latter of which rarely makes an appearance at Super Tours, but is known for racing that’s every bit as competitive as SM.
