Video: Behind the Scenes at an SCCA Drivers' School

When it comes to amateur motorsports, the Sports Car Club of America® offers nearly all you can imagine. From Time Trials to RoadRally, autocross, RallyCross, volunteering, and more, there’s something for just about anyone who gets their giggles with cars. While participation is easy once you’re involved, it’s that first step that’s the hardest – especially when it comes to SCCA Road Racing. From finding a drivers' school to locking in a race car, purchasing safety equipment, and wrapping up an assortment of other logistics, there’s a lot to do before heading on track for an SCCA drivers' school. But the truth is, it’s easier than you think – as this video from Spec Miata racer Jake Koeberlein explains.

Jake went through San Francisco Region’s drivers' school in 2012 when he was 15-years old, and recently, his friend Alex wanted to do the same, so Jake produced a YouTube video showcasing everything Alex – or anyone looking to attend any SCCA drivers' school – needed to consider.

The video walks viewers through the entire process, from Jake’s suggestion that students attend at least one track day prior to their drivers' school, to paging through SCCA’s General Competition Rules (GCR) to get a clear understanding of class rules, safety regulations, flags, and more. Jake then explains some of the basics that need to be completed prior to the SCCA Region’s drivers' school, which includes becoming an SCCA member, having a physician complete a physical exam, completing SCCA’s Novice Permit application, and then signing up for the school. He even breaks down the cost of a school weekend, offering viewers a glimpse into how much they can expect to spend on everything like safety gear and the like.

Jake then follows Alex through the San Francisco Region drivers' school, discussing the progression of the on-track sessions, what Alex learned, and what Jake observed as someone who has racing experience. Come the end of the video, we even get to see Alex graduate from the school.
