Picking A Pad: Tips to Brake Pad Testing

What brake pad is best for you? That’s actually a more personal question than anyone might think, but Hawk Performance, the official brake products of SCCA, most certainly has a solution for you. To illustrate the possibilities, Hawk, along with the staff at Steeda and their highly modified Ford Mustang EcoBoost, tested Hawk’s DTC line of brake pads, as well as street pads for a baseline comparison, and captured the results on video. Not surprisingly, the DTC line – including the DTC-30, the DTC-60, and the most aggressive DTC-70 – topped the street pad. But the story doesn’t end there.

The most important part of the test is that the team repeated the same test over and over, removing as many variables as possible to find the best pads for this particular vehicle under these specific circumstances. That’s in stark contrast to many amateur racers, whose budgets often require pads being used until completely worn, changing to a new compound the next time in the hopes of finding the right package. Even so, there’s something to be learned in the methodology shown in this video.

With a heavy car, the aggressive DTC-70 was the best of the test in this case. Is that the right package for you? That’s up to you to decide, and this video may assist you in making that determination.

See the video below for some tips and tricks that you can carry with you when you’re hunting for the ultimate brake pad package for your performance car.
