’22 COTA Hoosier Super Tour: At A Glance

The opening event of the 2022 Hoosier Racing Tire SCCA Super Tour had a little bit of everything. Some new faces, some new cars, some wet weather, and some great racing. Now that the first event is behind us, it’s time for drivers, teams and volunteers to mosey along to Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin, Texas, for the second of 10 competition weekends on this year’s schedule.

Same Layout, New Circuit Surface

COTA’s 20-turn counterclockwise circuit takes advantage of the naturally undulating landscape, including an intimidating 133-foot hill at Turn 1 that opens a lap around the 3.41-mile course. For the past few weeks, portions of COTA have undergone a large-scale resurfacing initiative. Turns 2 through 10, and 12 through 16, have been repaved along with a concrete pad that reinforces the areas at Turns 2 and 10 at the track. Ground penetration radar and laser mapping equipment were used to identify the different repairs needed. What will that mean February 5-6 during the Hoosier Super Tour? Time, and times, will only tell.

Saturday’s on-course action at COTA commences at 8 a.m. Central Time with 20-minute qualifying sessions for each of the seven race groups, followed by 25-minute (or 10-lap) races for each group Saturday afternoon. A second qualifying session of 15 minutes begins Sunday at 8 a.m. Central Time for each run group, followed by 35-minute (or 14-lap) races.

What to Watch

More than 220 entries are anticipated at the COTA Hoosier Super Tour, an event hosted by SCCA’s Lone Star Region. With more than 40 drivers, Spec Racer Ford Gen3 will likely again produce excitement to thrill onlookers. The same can be said of the more than 40-car field expected for Spec Miata. In that battle you’ll find 2021 Jim Fitzgerald Rookie of the Year winner Connor Zilisch.

GT-2 could be interesting with 15 entries in the first race group. There you’ll find GT-2 defending Runoffs champ Tim Kezman who recently received the 2021 Kimberly Cup award for most improved road racer. The sixth race group then has just short of a dozen Formula Atlantic cars, and the same is true of Super Touring Lite and Touring 4 in the seventh and final race group each day.

Register Online for Contingency Prizes

The process for contingency registration has changed this year, and we’ll keep reminding competitors of the new procedure so nobody loses out on thousands of dollars of cash and merchandise available through SCCA’s various contingency partners. In 2022 all platinum, gold and silver contingency claims will be processed online. That means no more tracking down a tech inspector to sign contingency forms that accidently come up missing. Remember, however, that bronze-level programs (like Hoosier and SCCA Enterprises) still require paper forms returned to the partner.

As always, it’s crucial to follow all of the instructions. That includes registering in advance and taking appropriate photos of your car at the event. The good news is, it’s all spelled out at the webpage linked below. Take a look so that you don’t miss any opportunities!
