2017 Bristol Champ/Match Tours: Tune-In

For only the second time this season, there will be two events, back-to-back, on the same weekend in the same location. Just a month ago, the masses flocked to Lincoln, Nebraska for a Tire Rack ProSolo and Championship Tour. This weekend, it’s for a Championship Tour and Match Tour in Bristol, Tennessee. The weather is questionable at this point, but after seeing some recent flooding photos from the site, nobody is hoping for rain. With some favorable requests into the rain gods, let’s take a look at some of the classes.

Super Street (7/6 Entries) – Don’t lie; you like looking at anything that falls in this class. This weekend SS is populated with a slew of C7 Corvettes and an NSX from HART (that’s the Honda of America Racing Team). While we’ve been seeing the new NSX for about a year now, the new hasn’t worn off yet. We’ll be keeping an eye on this class, because it’s fun.

C Street (14/14 Entries) – It’s not just the Spec ND class. Chris Harp will try to continue his strong season in his ND, but will have strong competition from Andrew Pallotta in his “backup autocross car,” another ND. There are a couple of outcasts in disguise as a new ND RF will try to overcome the weight disadvantage with Darren Daubenspeck and Ryan Kowalewski at the wheel, while Chris Sparks hopes to uphold the glory of the RX-8.

D Street (14/10) – In Lincoln, Dennis Sparks took the win, but Jordan Towns set the fastest time on day two. This co-driving pair is getting fun to watch in the WRX. John Wolf was also in the fold at Lincoln and looks to improve on his trophy with a win.

H Street (4/10) – One of the few classes getting bigger at the Match Tour, we spy Tom O’Gorman on the entry list.

Street Touring Xtreme (16/13) – We’re pretty confident that Kyle Herbst and Gregg Henderson will be leading the charge in STX with Phil Bedard in the mix. There are some variations in this class with a 330i, Mini, and RX8 joining the slew of Twins.

Street Touring Roadster (17/9) – We expect David Marcus to win this one, but will be watching Brian Karwan and Robert Carpenter to throw wrenches in this prediction.

B Street Prepared (7/7) – If we’re not mistaken, this is the first National-level appearance for Nikki Edwards in Michael Bright’s 350Z. It combines two things she’s shown success with: horsepower and Hoosiers. Based on results from recent regional events, we think she has the speed to give the boys a run for their money, but Tim “Buckie” Maxey has been doing well regionally in his Mazdaspeed Miata. He’s our pick to win.

Street Modified (9/5) – To our knowledge, Tim White is undefeated this season in his Impreza. Without a Godzilla present, that’s not likely to change. He is working on a setup change in preparation for Nationals, so it’ll be worth paying attention.

Super Street Modified (7/3) – Randall Wilcox and Eric Anderson have had a few tough failures lately in the Miata known as LaFawnDuh. Normal close racing with Matt Glagola will be on our radar for the Champ Tour. The surprise on this entry list is why Daniel Wendel in the Maxey BSP Miata, and we expect to see Chuck Pyanowski in that car as well.
