2017 Tire Rack San Diego Match Tour: Event Recap

With the day finished up and the pesky details like contingencies squared away on day one, Sunday’s Matching yielded to be quite interesting. With the earlier start on Sunday by an hour, the dropping temperatures were a factor as drivers adjusted their cars accordingly to deal with the less grip the surface yielded as a result. Having a clean slate Sunday, drivers were able to set aside the woes of potential bad drives on Day One, and just focus on getting three solid runs in in the morning, with the matching to be done in the afternoon.

Congratulations to:

Top Dog Challenge Winner: Jeff Wong STX FRS

Side note - Some here have a knack of trolling their competition before they go out on their run ;-)

We also found out that Connor Bloum (Pro IMSA Racer) got knocked out of heat because a loose tire pressure gauge fell out of the car during his run which resulted in a cone penalty knocking him out of the running for the Top Dog.

Underdog Challenge Winner - James Yom - STR S2000

Lucky Dog Winner - Mark Wolfe - ES Miata

Mark will be receiving his first contingency payout this weekend from Mazda and Hawk driving his 2000 ES Miata. The car also won the class on Saturday.

Many thanks to Arvind Govindaraj and Ric Senior along help with other members of San Diego Region for designing an absolutely fantastic course that so many people enjoyed driving. The lot’s deteriorating surface conditions always makes for difficult course layouts, but this was definitely memorable, fast-paced, adrenaline pumping, and beautifully marked course.

If you missed out on this event, you missed huge laughs, great camaraderie, and awesome competition. With Qualcomm Stadium’s future being uncertain due the local NFL team moving to Los Angeles, this is an event that will be long remembered.

Thank you to all those involved and San Diego Region for an outstanding event!
